A JEWEL CASKET by P.W.
Chinese with their Pigtails Caused not a Little Excitement
. . . . Mr. Andrew Smillie Hughes is the oldest male identity living in Woodside at the present time, and a chat with the old gentleman is most informative. The history of his family commences with the arrival of Lawrence and Mary Stodart in South Australia with their children in the ship Palmyra in 1839. The family landed at Holdfast Bay and travelled to the Nairne district, where the township consisted of two cottages, one of which Lawrence Stodart acquired. He then purchased land and commenced to build a residence, but died before it was completed. His daughter Mary married William Frederick Hughes, son of George Robert Hughes, who arrived in the Colony in the ship Diadem in 1840. For some time the Hughes family stayed in Adelaide where George Robert Hughes engaged in his trade as a tailor, but later he, with his family, moved to Nairne. His son, William Frederick, was a storekeeper and builder, but after his marriage to Mary Stodart he purchased land in the Woodside district. The property "Bleakside'' is still in the hands of the family. Andrew Smillie Hughes is the youngest son of the late William Frederick Hughes and was born at Bleakside in 1865. He was educated locally, and has continuously resided in the old home which he took over at his father's demise. By his marriage with Ruby Violet Dunn, daughter of the late George Dunn, of Gumbank, Charleston, there were joined two of the oldest families in South Australia. There are two surviving: children, Richard Andrew, and Elizabeth Jane. The family has been associated with the State for over a century and few families have rendered such continuous public service. The father and three of the sons have each served as councillors in their local district councils. Andrew Smillie Hughes, like his father and elder brothers, has given service to his fellow citizens. For several years he was a councillor of the Onkaparinga district council, and for many years a committeeman of the Onkaparinga Racing club of which he is the only surviving life member. He has not missed a meeting of that historic club in all the years.
Reference to the marriage of Andrew Smillie Hughes with Ruby Violet Dunn prompts some biographical recording of that particular Dunn family. William Dunn arrived in South Australia with his wife and family on October 10th, 1840. A brother had arrived previously, and William joined him in pastoral pursuits at Charleston. He died on April 12th, 1879. William Dunn's son George (born1843, died 1906) named his eldest son Lionel, and Lionel had a son whom he named Douglas, who also has a son named Douglas Malcolm. The parents of William Dunn came out to Australia in 1845, so that the last-named child, it will be observed, viz., Douglas Malcolm, represents the sixth generation of the Dunn family in Australia-truly a unique genealogical record. Miss Laura Amelia Dunn, the daughter of George, resides in the delightful old homestead Gumbank, erected in the English style by William Dunn in the early forties. It is one of the earliest houses erected in that part of the State. . . .

Founders of Australia
Born on family property "Bleakside", educated locally and took over property on death of father. "Bleakside" mainly used for grazing sheep of crossbread variety realising high prices.
By marrying daughter of George Dunn of "Gumbank" Charleston, joined two pioneer families in S.A.
Two surviving children.

ABATTORS MEN ON TRIAL
Theft of Wheat Alleged
IVES COMMITTED
Further charges of larceny against former officers of the Metropolitan Abattoirs Board were heard by Mr. E. J. R. Morgan; S.M., in the Adelaide Police Court today. The charges were against Herbert Parbury Ive, aged 68, former works manager, and Herbert Casson, of Pooraka, a former employee at the Abattoirs. . . .
DISMISSED RECENTLY
Frederick William Naylor Fillmore, secretary and general manager of the abattoirs, said that Ive and Casson were dismissed recently. Cross-examined by Mr. Nelligan, Fillmore said that there had been a few cases of manure having been delivered from the abattoirs without any charge being made. When that was done he gave instructions from the office to the works. Mr. Nelligan-Did you have manure delivered to your private residence in December last year? -I may have done. And in November, 1933? -I may have done. Have you paid for it in every case?--As far as I can recollect, yes, although perhaps not in one or two early instances. Fillmore said that the board had granted concessions with regard to his garden. Other employees were granted concessions, such as the right to keep stock on the property. Mr. Nelligan- Did those concessions include the right to feed the stock in the board's paddocks?-Yes. And the right to use the board's hay? -I could not say that.
CONCESSIONS POSSIBLE
Fillmore said that Casson might have been granted concessions by Ive, and might reasonably have believed that Ive had the right to give him permission to keep poultry on Abattoirs property. . . .

CRIMINAL SITTINGS
The November Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court were continued yesterday. Mr. Justice Piper presided, and the Crown Prosecutor (Mr. R.R. Chamberlain) appeared for the Crown.

The Crown Prosecutor was assisted by Mr. C.L. Abbott, and Mr. F.V. Smith, K.C., with Mr. A.S. Blackburn, appeared for Ive. Mr. Chamberlain, in opening, said that as works manager at the Abattoirs, Ive was in complete control of the works at Gepp's Cross, a position of responsibility and trust. After the weekly sales at the Abattoirs, odd numbers of sheep in excess of those bought were kept in a separate flock, the numbers of which were not recorded. The 57 sheep in the charge were from this flock, and had been sold on Ive's account. It was only this year that the theft, a difficult one to trace, was discovered. Stanley McGregor Reid, chartered accountant, of Andrew avenue, Mills wood (chairman of the board), said that on August 15 he interviewed the accused in the presence of Mr. Phelps and Mr. Fillmore, of the board, at the board's office in Pirie street. Ive said he had not sold any sheep between August 1929, and the date of the interview. The three transactions referred to in a letter from his bank were explained by Ive as being the proceeds of the sale of 60 or 70 sheep which he had sold through Coles Bros, after buying them from Gough Sykes, since dead. Sykes was formerly head drover at the Abattoirs. These transactions were confirmed by Coles Bros. Frederick William Naylor Fillmore, secretary and general manager of the board, of Fifth avenue, St. Peters, said that he had held his present position since July, 1915; and that his office was at the board's headquarters in the city. The accused had held his position as works manager with the board from 1909 until his dismissal and had complete control at the works. He had no authority to appropriate or sell sheep from the surplus flock. Claims by butchers for errors in delivery amounting to over £2 had to be referred to the witness. The surplus flock was resorted to make good any shortage in deliveries. John Powell, acting works manager of the Board, of Dutton terrace, Medindie, said he had been chief clerk at Gepp's Cross since 1912, until he assumed his present position. The surplus flock was made up of strays at the works, over deliveries and natural increase. Any shortage in delivery to a butcher would be paid for by the Board, where it could not be replaced by a carcass, and any sheep over would go into the flock. Wilkes was the head -drover prior to his dismissal this year, and in his care the surplus flock was placed. Records as to the flock were first instituted only about two months ago, continued today.
Frederick Thomas Wilkes, drover, of Airlie avenue, Prospect, said he became head drover at the Abattoirs in 1928 when Gough Sykes, the previous head drover, died. The witness was before that head brand. As head drover the surplus flock was under his supervision. Usually there were between 100 to 200 sheep in the flock. While head brander he assisted Sykes to remove sheep from the flock to the market. While head drover he had removed sheep from the flock to the markets on Ive's instructions three or four times, each time removing 15 to 20 sheep. At the market he had seen them at Coles Bros.' sale yards. Ive had told him to put them in the dip yard, and that he would ring up Coles. In August last Ive communicated with him and got him to sign a document written by Ive. Kinnear, the cashier, witnessed the signature. The document certified that to the best of the witnesses knowledge and belief the sheep delivered to the market were the property of Ive and not the Board. "The sheep did not belong to Ive. I signed the wrong document," said Wilkes. "He told me they were accusing him of selling the sheep. He asked me to sign the document and I signed it." In response to a message, said the witness, he went to Ives place about September 15. Ive said he got the sheep from Sykes, and told him to say he got them from Sykes.
Cross-examined by Mr Smith, Wilkes said he was interviewed by the Police several times. The never threatened him. In reply to the question whether he had seen Mr Abbott, the witness replied, "I don't know Mr Abbott, and I don't want to know him."
The hearing will be continued today.

Interfering with Cadets.
Expensive Fireworks Display. At the Adelaide State Children's Court on Thursday afternoon (before Mr. J. Gordon, S.M.), Allan Victor Rose, a youth, of Ellen street, Nailsworth, was charged oh the information of Adjutant Pulton, with having at Nailsworth on September 26 unlawfully interfered with a part of the Defence Force, D Company of the 80th Battalion, in the performance of a military duty by throwing ignited crackers into their midst. Mr. C. H. Powers appeared for the prosecution. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Counsel pointed out that accused had received medical exemption from serving as a cadet.
David Fulton gave formal evidence.
Arthur Sydney Hughes, area officer of the battalion, stated that on the evening in question he was in charge of the parade being held by D Company at Nailsworth. There were three squads. The one under Sgt.Mjr. Walker was subjected to considerable interference by a number of persons, and witness instructed that it should be joined to his own squad. Not having been able to obtain a constable, they marched back, to the orderly room. On approaching the premises about half a packet of ignited crackers were thrown amidst the cadets. Sgt. Mjr. Spencer went through the lines and secured the defendant. Rose was taken to a shop nearby. At first he gave the name of Johnson, but on being further questioned revealed his correct name. Frank J William Spencer, instructional officer, said that all along the inarch part of the company had been disturbed by boys shouting out and throwing mud. Later he saw defendant strike a lucifer and apply it to a cracker, which, was thrown at the cadets, and exploded in their midst. Defendant stated that he had bought a halfpenny string of crackers, and was taking them home when someone must have put a lighted match to them. He threw the crackers down, and they fell among the cadets. A boy had promised to attend Court and give evidence, but had disappointed him. Mr. Gordon said he did not believe defendant's story. He must have thrown the crackers. Unless he could leave the cadets alone he had better keep away from them. It was a serious offence, but as it was the first conviction of the kind he would not impose a heavy penalty. He would be fined 5/, with £1 costs.

In partnership with his two sons, Lindsay and Robert, he owned Bulloo Creek station near Olary. In the Cockburn line, and Mount Horrocks, near Kooringa. He took a keen interest in his properties up to within a short time of his death. He had sound judgment in regard to stock and station properties, and grew a fine type of Merino sheep. Burra Record (SA : 1878-1954) Wednesday 15 June 1932
OBITUARY
The late Mr. W.J. McBride.
When William James McBride breathed his last at Aberdeen on June 3rd, there passed away one of those sterling, hard-working, practical men who helped to lay the foundations of South Australia, aye, and even of the Commonwealth as it exists to-day. In later years a false prosperity deceived us and maybe the superstructure has become top-heavy and the walls show signs of cracking, but that is no fault of those great hearted men who went out into the wilderness and fought and overcame the backblocks, developing in our arid areas Australia's great pastoral industry. In these days of motor cars and wireless the hardship and mono tony would be incomparable with those days of bullock wagons and isolation. The late Mr. McBride was one of those who faced and fought those old conditions and came out on top. He was the eldest son of that pioneer of pioneers, the late R. James Martin McBride who in the initial stages of land settlement, had possibly even more hardships and dangers to overcome than his eldest son. Anyone who reads the first of a series of articles by Mr. F. Treloar in this issue, will possibly gain some conception of what pioneering a station was like in the 'sixties' even so near to the seaboard as 'The Gums.' It has been said of the late Mr. McBride that 'he did not take interest in public matters,' meaning presumably that he did not bring himself before the public. But the life work of such as he was of more importance to Australia than that of the combined efforts of many of our politicians. The deceased gentleman can be claimed as a Burra boy as he was born at Copperhouse in the December of 1855. He was later educated at Mr. C. R. White's school. His father then owned 'The Gums' station and from his early boyhood, in fact, until he had passed his 30th year, his life was spent at 'The Gums.' He being the eldest son of a large family, worked for his father and with his second brother, Robert, loyally assisted their father through both good and bad seasons. When years later 'The Gums' station was cut up he bought the unresumed portion that was left, from his father, which he held for three years and then sold to Messrs Cockrum and Pearse. He next took up a block of country east of Burra known as the North Dam (now known as Kia Ora station and in possession of his youngest brother, Mr. Norman McBride), but owing to a run of bad seasons he had to leave this property. From thence he went to Mt Horrocks, a property he purchased from his father and situated north of Redruth. Later when the Outalpa run (near Olary) was cut up he secured a portion known as Bulloo Creek and took into partnership his two youngest sons, Messrs Lindsay and Robert (Robin) McBride. Mr. McBride always maintained a keen interest in his properties and like his father was a man of grit and determination and although approaching his 80th year he frequently when visiting his Bulloo Creek property would leave the train at McDonnell's Hill siding and walk the 4½ miles, through sandy country, out to the station. He was noted for his sound judgment in regard to station properties and sheep and was not only acclaimed one of the best judges of weight and value, both of sheep and cattle, but also one of the best counters of stock in this district. He never at any time took an active part in public affairs, his main interest being retained in his properties and the breeding of a very fine type of Merino sheep. The news of his illness, the result of an accident some months ago, which caused an injury to a lung, came as a surprise to his friends, as before that he appeared to be in robust health. Of a most reserved nature those who had dealings with him knew the strict integrity of his character and in consequence held him in the highest esteem. The widow, previously Miss Florence Stoddart of Woodside, and four sons and two daughters survive. They are: Messrs Cyril McBride (pastoralist) W.A.; Sidney, Perth, W.A.; Lindsay, Bulloo Creek, Olary, and Robert McBride, Mt. Horrocks, Burra; Mrs. Jude (Maisie), wife of Dr. Jude, Mildura, and Vera, Mrs. L. Hogan, of Sydney, also a number of grandchildren. His surviving brothers are Messrs Robert M. McBride, of Toorak; Thomas McBride, Redcliffe station; and N.H. McBride, of Glenelg and his surviving sisters Mrs J.C. Sandland, Kooringa; Mrs. W.G. Hawkes, North Adelaide; Mrs. E.J. Keynes, Seacliff; Mrs. J. Boehme, Ucolta; and Mrs. Evans of Adelaide. The late Mr. Albert J. McBride who died in 1928 was a brother.

DEATH OF MR. W. B. HOPKINS.
It is with deep regret we record the death of Mr. William Bartlett Hopkins, for several years the much respected manager of Messrs. R. S. Howard and Sons Ltd., which took place at his late residence, Currajong street, at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, 11th inst. The funeral took place the following afternoon, the cortege being a lengthy and representative one. Some 50 brethren of the Masonic Lodge, of which deceased was a Past Master, marched in front of the hearse, and six representatives of Messrs. Howard and Sons acted as pall-bearers. The Anglican burial service was impressively read by the Rev. R. Seymour Smith, the deceased's favourite hymn, "Abide with Me," being sung during the service. The Chaplain of the Masonic Lodge, Wor. Bro. W. F. Jackson, then read the Masonic service, and a funeral ode was sung by the brethren. The late Mr. Hopkins, who was 52 years of age, was born in Adelaide in 1869, and was married in Sydney in 1903. He came to Parkes some nine years ago to take charge of the grocery department of Messrs. R. S. Howard and Sons., and five years later was promoted to the position of general manager for the firm. An exceptionally experienced, capable and courteous business man he filled the position with much credit and gained a host of friends. Some 18 months ago he had a succession of heavy colds and a serious pulmonary attack followed which resulted in his death. In February last Mr. Hopkins' condition was so serious that he went to the seaside in the hopes of recuperating, but he gradually got worse, and returned home by car on the 6th inst., passing away a few days later as stated. Besides the widow a family of five (four boys and one girl), the eldest of whom is 17 and the youngest an infant of but two months, are left behind, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.

William married Marion Elaine BLACK [561] on 10 Sep 1902 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Marion was born on 10 Nov 1881 in Cumberland, New South Wales and died on 2 Feb 1929 in Waratah, New South Wales at age 47.

MR. D0NNELL'S DEATH.
A verdict of accidental death was returned by the City Coroner (Dr. Ramsay Smith) on Tuesday morning after the enquiry into the death of Isaac Stewart Donnell (46). Evidence was tendered which showed that the deceased was riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the road, and when approaching a woman, who appeared to alight from an electric tram, he lost control of his machine. As a result he collided with the woman, who was knocked into the gutter, while the deceased fell backwards from his machine and struck his head on the ground. He received a large fracture to the base of the skull and extensive laceration of the brain to which causes death was due. Deceased was taken to the Adelaide Hospital where he died a few hours after his admission.
