Hit by Wood
VICTOR HARBOR, Saturday.- George William Hughes, 17, farmhand, received fatal injuries at Waitpinga, 14 miles from here today, when a tree stump was being blasted during the construction of a bridge over the Waitpinga Creek. The youth was one of a party of five who were working at the crossing. His father, Mr. F. G. [sic] Hughes, bored the hole in the stump, and Norman Sandercock placed gelignite and a detonator in the hole and set fire to the fuse. Pieces of wood flew through the air, and one is believed to have struck the youth and knocked him into a ravine, 20 ft below. His father was first to reach Hughes, who was badly wounded in the head. He was taken to the South Coast District Hospital, where he died three hours later.

BLASTING OPERATIONS
LEAD TO YOUTH'S DEATH
Struck On Head By Piece Of Wood
VICTOR HARBOUR, March 1.
While engaged in blasting operations at Waitpinga, about nine miles from Victor Harbour[sic], on Saturday afternoon, George William Hughes, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. G. [sic] Hughes, dairy farmers at Waitpinga, was killed, through being struck by a piece of timber from a tree stump. In company with his father and Messrs. Norman Sandercock, N. Fraser and F. A. Jagger, all residents of Waitpinga, George Hughes was engaged in the construction of a crossing and approach over the Waitpinga Creek. His father bored a hole in the stump of a tree, and Sandercock placed gelignite and a detonator in the hole and set fire to the fuse. The party retired 30 yards away, but the explosion sent pieces of wood through the air, and one of these struck Hughes in the forehead and knocked him into a creek. He was found unconscious, and badly wounded. Dr. Graham Shipway, who was summoned, ordered his removal to the South Coast District Hospital, where he died three hours later. Mounted Constables Dodd and Richardson submitted a report to the coroner (Mr. S. D. Bruce), who deemed an inquest unnecessary.

A wave of sympathy for the bereaved relatives passed over the town on Saturday morning, when the death of Jean Mary (Molly) elder daughter of Mr and Mrs R.J. (Robin) McBride, of Aberdeen, was announced. Molly who would have reached her fifteenth year on 11th May next, was taken ill whilst at Girton Proprietary School, Adelaide, where she was a pupil. She was later brought home to Aberdeen, where her illness assumed such a serious turn that despite the best medical and nursing skill procurable, she passed away on Friday evening last. Molly who was born at Burra, was educated first at the local Church of England Day School and last year went to Girton to complete her studies. She had a remarkably sweet and sympathetic disposition and was a great favourite with all who knew her. At the funeral which took place at Kooringa on Sunday, was seen one of the longest corteges that has passed through the town. The Rev. D.L. Redding conducted the services at the home and at the grave side. The casket was carried by Messrs G.H. Dow, M W. Bednall, Max Pearce and K.C. Sandland. The sides of the grave were a mass of beautiful flowers and the flower laden casket also rested on a bed of lovely blooms. Many other floral tributes were received by the bereaved parents.

Married At Payneham Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stewart Harvey leaving St. Aidan's Church, Payneham, after their wedding yesterday. Mrs. Harvey was formerly Miss Shirley Patricia McBride. (newspaper photograph in Events gallery)

Bride Wears White Moss Crepe At Payneham Wedding In St. Aidan's Church, Payneham, yesterday, the wedding was celebrated by Archdeacon Adams, of Shirley Patricia McBride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. McBride, of Willabo station, NSW, with Donald Stewart Harvey, son of Mrs. E. Harvey, of Salisbury, and the late Mr. A. Harvey. The bride wore a charming frock of white moss crepe, embroidered in Corticelli on the bodice and at the waistline. Short shirred sleeves and a slight train were a modish finish. A lovely old Honiton lace veil lent by her aunt, Mrs. Norman McBride, fell in graceful folds to the hem. She carried a shower bouquet of pastel pink flowers and wore the bridegroom's gift of pearls. Miss Pauline Gordon (bride's cousin was bridesmaid in powder blue crepe, sequined in silver on the jacket. With it was worn an attractive cap of real flowers frothed with blue veiling, and she carried a posy of pastel toned flowers. The best man was Mr. David Harvey (brother of the bridegroom). A reception was held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. F.J. Jude at Joslin, where three reception rooms were opened into one large room and massed with flowers. Mrs. R.J. McBride wore a dusky pink jacket suit, with a nigger brown felt hat. A spray of pink roses was pinned on her jacket. Mrs. E. Harvey chose black with a black hat and also wore a pink rose spray. Mrs. F.J. Jude was in a black ensemble with blue and black sequin trimming, and black hat touched with blue. The bridal table was charmingly arranged by Mrs. Norman McBride, on a lace cloth, in the centre of which stood the wedding cake, iced in magnolia tone with white camel lias at the base. A crystal basket filled with pale pink carnations blue ageratum, lavender and sweet peas, also low bowls with pastel toned flowers, were also table decorations, the charm of which was enhanced by silver candelabra, each holding pale pink candles. The bride went away in a powder blue Angora jacket suit beaded in crystal at the neckline and on the pockets, and her powder blue hat was massed with pastel flowers and blue veiling. The future home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harvey will be at Tor Downs Station, NSW.
