Otautau Standard and Wallace County Chronicle, Volume XXVI, Issue 1322, 9 June 1931
MRS. JOHANNA LYNCH.
A very old resident of the Township passed to her long rest on Sunday in the person of Mrs Johanna Lynch, relict of the late Daniel Lynch, at the age of 86 years. A native of county Kerry, Ireland, she arrived in New Zealand with her husband 58 years ago, landing in Auckland from the "Hydaspes." They took up residence at Gisborne for a few months prior to coming to Otautau, where deceased has lived ever since. With her husband the late Mrs Lynch has witnessed the development of this town and district from its early stages. Her husband for a great many years plyed his trade as a Blacksmith in a little shop just across the bridge over the Otautau stream on the Main Street. The building still stands and is used as a garage by her son, John. At various times different members of the family were associated with the Otautau Football team and were among the best players for the original Otautau Club. Prior to the introduction of motor rail services, deceased's husband acted as Mail Carrier, using a horse and buggy, and was noted for his regularity and reliability on the conluct of the service irrespective of weather conditions. This service is now conducted under modern lines by his son John and extends over a much greater area, more easily covered with he speedy car. Deceased, although of a very retiring disposition, was of most upright and kindly character and until completely laid aside for the last three years was always willing to lend her aid to many old friends. Her husband and two sons predeceased her, while she is mourned by her family of five sons - Thomas and Daniel, Invercargill; Timothy, Matamata; Michael in Australia and John, Otautau. The interment took place to the Otautau Cemetery this morning, requiem mass being celebrated in the Catholic Chapel, Rev. Father Donnegan officiating.
