PRESS, VOLUME LXXII, ISSUE 21838, 18 JULY 1936
SUPREME COURT SITTING. PRISONERS SENTENCED
Bigamy Charge Other prisoners were dealt with as follows: -
George Ensor (Mr W. F. Tracy), aged 52. appeared on a charge of bigamy, to which he had pleaded guilty in the lower court Mr Tracy said that accused had married in 1911, and had been a sober and industrious man all his life. In 1920, when he was living in Christchurch, he obtained work in Dunedin. He went before his wife, intending her to join him, but she did not do so, and he received no communication from her. On returning to Christchurch he found that she had put the two youngest children in the Nazareth Home. With some difficulty he found her, but though she said she would join him. she did not do so. Apart from maintenance proceedings in 1923, which came to nothing, he heard no more of her. In 1926 he met his present wife, to whom he disclosed the whole of the circumstances. Enquiries were made, but no trace could be found of the first wife. He married again in May, 1929. His Honour said that the crime of bigamy was serious. The circumstances described by counsel showed that accused had done no wrong either to his first wife or to the woman he had bigamously married. It was seven years at least between the time when he parted with his wife and his second marriage. There was no association between him and his wife, and in the circumstances he was not responsible for her maintenance. His Honour said that he felt justified in refraining from sentencing accused to imprisonment Ensor was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months.
