Australian Christian Commonwealth (SA : 1901 - 1940) Fri 3 Nov 1905 News of the Churches: Zoar. The jubilee of the Methodist Church was commemorated on October 15 and 16. On Sunday the Rev. Chas. Martin, who officiated 21 years ago in the Church as the colleague of the present minister of the Circuit, preached two sermons, which were highly appreciated, to overflowing congregations. On Monday a large number of people gathered, although the weather threatened; and the absence of the Chief Justice-who had been expected as a visitor to the jubilee, but had written to the pastor explaining his inability to come through the pressure of his engagements-was much regretted. The afternoon meeting was presided over by Mr. G. Manshman, J.P., formerly a scholar in the Sunday-school at Zoar. Reminiscent addresses were made in mention of old times. The original trustees were Samuel Keen, William Baker, Thomas Long, Henry Pritchard, and William Worden; date, April 19, 1854. The first church was opened about 1855. In 1865, the jubilee year of the Bible Christian denomination, a new church was erected, and Thomas Long and William Baker having died, new trustees were added, viz., John Worden, William Adair, William Smitham, Samuel Smitham, George Long, and Peter Rowland. The foundation-stone was laid by the Hon. T. Hogarth, of Smithfield. The dedication sermons were preached by the Rev James Ashton and the Rev, J. G. Wright. The Rev. John Ridclift was Superintendent of the Circuit. All these have passed away ; but the chairman of the public meeting, Mr. S. J. Way, now tne Chief Justice of South Australia, still survives. One of the most revered memories was that of Mrs, Long, whose earnest and tactful influence had helped from the commencement, known afterwards as the second wife of the Rev. James Way, whom she survived 10 years. She died in 1894, and rests in the cemetery at the back of the church with her first husband and many other local pioneers. Most of the deceased ministers of the Bible Christian period, and many others still living, have laboured in the Circuit, and were respectfully mentioned. The church, when built, was described as one of the most beautiful out of Adelaide, and, having lately been renovated, looks extremely well. The public tea lasted nearly four hours; proceeds, £14 Is. The following ladies did excellently, both for tea and supper: - Mesdames H. Pritchard, E. Ridgway, A. Robinson, A. Worden, S. Worden, J. Worden, G. Cawrse, W. Argent, T. Broster, J. Fatchen, Sutton, Stevens, Misses S. Huxtable, F. and M. Argent, J. Clarke, and A. Broster. A crowded public meeting was presided over by Mr. Joseph Ashton, J.P. The Gawler Methodist Choir discoursed delightful melody, and the pastor (Rev. J, H. Ashton) reported, inter alia, that about £50 had been received. The Revs. H. Chester, C. Martin, T. G. White, W. Robinson, and Messrs. J. P. Swann and J. G. Ashton assisted in the day's proceedings.
William married Mary Morrison CRAWFORD [13038] [MRIN: 4813]. (Mary Morrison CRAWFORD [13038] was born in 1819 and died on 28 Sep 1860 in South Australia.)
William next married Auguste Alvine BARTH [13085] [MRIN: 4831], daughter of Christoph BARTH [13087] and Unknown, on 23 Jun 1871 in Res of G Dengenhardt, Peachy Belt, South Australia. (Auguste Alvine BARTH [13085] was born in 1823 and died on 5 Sep 1910 in Norwood, Adelaide, South Australia.)
