Chronicle (Adelaide) Saturday 15 December 1928

Rev. JOHN NAIRN.
The Rev. John Nairn, who died recently, was at one time widely known as a thoughtful preacher. He entered the Methodist ministry in 1882, but owing to deafness retired from the active work in 1909. He was a scholarly man, a student of English literature, and could converse freely in French and Italian. He had a knowledge of some other languages also. His preaching was marked by philosophical insight. He was more of a teacher than an orator, and usually strove to illuminate his theme with an historical setting. He was thoroughly abreast of the times in his reading, and until his deafness made conversation difficult he loved to discuss books, especially those dealing with great subjects. Mr. Nairn was a most unassuming man, and he won the complete confidence and the affection of those who knew him. His first circuit was Gumbowie, and between 1883 and the time of his retirement he was stationed at Quorn, Millicent, Auburn, Templars, Melrose, Goolwa, Minlaton, Port Wakefleld, Ardrossan, Terowie, and Port Broughton. For several years he lived at Prospect and regularly attended the Enfield Methodist Church, although owing to his affliction he could hear but little of the service. He left a widow, five sons, and one daughter.
