The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser (SA : 1880 - 1954) Thu 13 Aug 1936 Page 1 MOUNT PLEASANT ARBOR DAY Primary School Celebration On Friday morning the pupils of the Mount Pleasant primary school made the initial move, an arbor day, in the tree planting drive, in augurated in this town to commemorate the present Centenary year. Parents, school committee, members of the Women's Welfare Club, together with many representative citizens, attended the ceremony and showed keen interest in the proceedings. The first tree was planted in front of the council chambers by Colin and Moira Smith, child ren of the district clerk, Mr. W. Ross Smith. A short address was then made by Councillor J.C. Herriot in which he appealed to the children to make good citizenship the object of their lives. He paid a tribute to Mr. R.T. Melrose for his generosity in supplying the trees and guards and expressed the hope that every child present would show their appreciation by aiding in the care and preservation of the trees planted. The chairman of the school committee (Mr. H.F. Neumann) supported the remarks of the previous speaker and called for three hearty cheers for Mr. Melrose. In reply, Mr. Melrose said that he appreciated the remarks made and hoped that the trees would be cared for and prove a further means of beautification in the town. He recalled that 36 years ago he had sponsored a similar tree planting drive and the well grown trees in the street to-day were evidence of the work on that occasion. In conclusion, Mr. Melrose asked the children to make of the trees their particular responsibility. Trees were then planted by the following children from each family:- Gordon and Ida Page; Leith and Ken Westphalen; Margaret Cooke; Tony Davey; Iris Treloar; Glenton Gregory; Eric and Hazel Deane; Dorothy and Arthur Wilksch; Ray O'Dea; Johnny Fergusson; Graham and Aileen Lewis; Kathleen and Beryl Vivian; Johnny Wiedenbach; Coralie Allen; Fay Harding; Harold Mueller and sister; Ron and Lindsay Noblett; and Peter, Pam, and Geoffrey Neumann. Campbell, Mr. H.F. Neumann (chairman of the school committee), Mr. W. Ross Smith, Sweets and oranges were distributed and a half holiday granted. Under the direction of Mr. Rice, relieving head teacher, the children rendered items. Much credit is due to Mr. Rice for his organization and efforts to make the day a real success. Mr. H.G. Porter, head teacer, who has been absent on sick leave returned to Mount Pleasant and witnessed the ceremony. A further tree planting demonstration will be held in the near future.
