Watched by his wife and parents, jockey Bob Roberts, 24, crashed fatally at Victoria Park today. His mount, Salvanos, cannoned through the nine-furlong jump in the Wakefield Trial Hurdle.
Roberts died in the racecourse casualty room shortly afterwards. His mount bled to death with internal injuries.
ROBERTS had been married for only a short while. His wife broke down when told the news at the course casualty room. She is expecting a baby. At the time of the fatality Salvanos was near the back of the field. After hitting the hurdle Salvanos somersaulted, rolled, and then lay kicking. Neither Roberts nor Salvanos could rise. Roberts suffered a fractured neck and fracture of the base of the skull. - Roberts, who lived at Railway terrace, Largs Bay, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Roberts. He served, his apprenticeship with Morphettville trainer L. Reid. He was also with J. J. Doyle at Gawler for a time. A B class jockey, he had not ridden many times on metropolitan courses.

He served five years with the A.I.F., was with the 2/27 Battalion in Balik Papan. He was the first Jockey killed in this State since Victorian Ray Wilson and Stan Kite lost their lives at Morphettville in 1938. Stewards questioned all riders after the fall today. They found Salvanos did not rise at all at the hurdle. "Salvanos knocked the first panel flat and turned a complete somersault. There was no interference," the stewards said. "On a winner" Seen at their home later in the afternoon, Roberts' parents said their son called out as he left for the races: "I think I'm on a winner today." His mother said: "It was his ambition to ride a winner. He had not done so, although, of course, he had not had many rides." Roberts will be buried on Monday.

Wife And Parents See Jockey Killed
Bob Roberts, 24, a jockey who had never won a race because of war service and a bad fall which kept him out of the saddle for a year, was killed at Victoria Park on Saturday. The crash was seen by his wife and parents, and Mrs. Roberts, who is expecting a baby soon, broke down when told the news at the course casualty room. Roberts rode Salvanos in the Wakefield Trial Hurdle and at the jump near the nine-furlong post the horse hit heavily without rising, somersaulted, rolled over and lay kicking. Neither Roberts nor the horse rose. Roberts died in the -casualty room, where he was found to be suffering from a broken neck. and fracture of the base of the skull. Salvanos died from internal haemorrhage. Roberts was the first Jockey killed in a race in Adelaide since S. Kite and tne Victorian R. Wilson were fatally injured at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup day,1938. Roberts, who lived at Railway terrace. Largs Bay, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Roberts.
