We regret to record the death of a well-known farmer and stock breeder in Mr. H. J. Rintoul, of Williams, which occurred on August 12th, the deceased passing away quietly in his sleep while still apparently in good health - an end that all can envy. The late Mr. Rintoul was born at Sale, Victoria, on April 9, 1869, and was a son of Mr. Peter Thomas Stuart Rintoul of "Rosedale," Gippsland, who came from the Tweed River, Scotland, among the earliest of the Scottish settlers in Australia. Coming to Western Australia in the late nineties, after gaining considerable farming experience on his father's farm, Mr. Rintoul joined his brother, Mr. Thomas S. Rintoul, in a partnership with Mr. John E. Clayton, now of Narrogin, but at that time the proprietor of a condensing plant on the Goldfields and under the title of Clayton & Rintoul Bros. a large general business was carried on in the heyday of the early goldfields years. For nearly a decade this partnership remained in existence, but after the completion of the goldfields water scheme, when the condensing plant was sold, the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Clayton took up what was afterwards the well-developed "Rosedale" estate and Mr. Rintoul purchased "Auburn Vale" at Williams, at that time in possession of Mr. R. Hamersley and comprising only 400 acres. He then acquired several adjoining properties from Messrs. J. Mitchell, Thomas Martin and Whitehorn, bringing his then homestead area to 2,400 acres. In addition to this he selected a block of 1,500 acres in the 14 Mile Brook district. Mr. Rintoul, although of a retiring disposition, always took a keen interest in the affairs of the district, especially in the Narrogin and Williams Agricultural Societies, being a committeeman of the latter body at one time. His great love of horses kept his attention constantly in the affairs of local racing clubs. He was twice married, his first wife, to whom he was united in 1900, being a daughter of the late Mr. Winnin, of Bendigo, Victoria, by whom he had one son and one daughter. This lady died in 1904 and three years later Mr. Rintoul espoused Mary Ellen, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Augustus Whitford, of Congeling, 14-Mile Brook, his family being later increased by two sons. For many years the late Mr. Rintoul was a director of the Great Southern Roller Flour Mills Ltd. The funeral at Narrogin on August 13 was one of the largest attended that has been seen here, many mourners following the remains to their last resting place where Rev. R. W. Needham, of Williams, performed the last rites of the Anglican Church. The chief mourners were the deceased's wife, sons and daughters-in-law. The coffin bearers were Messrs. T. A. Hardie, W. F. Andrews, H. Carne, A. Hardie, J. Barrett-Lennard, E. S. Hall, T. Lavender and R. H. Lack man. MESSRS. A. and M. Rintoul, owners of the well-known Auburn Valley stud, near Williams, are sons of the late Mr. Henry James Rintoul, a native of Sale, Victoria, and one who was widely and favourably known in the early goldfields days of this State. It was in the late 'nineties that the Rintoul brothers formed a partnership with Mr. J. E. Clayton, and for many years this firm operated condensing plants and engaged in contracting work on the goldfields. The firm also took up and developed the well-known Rosedale estate at Narrogin, which was later sold to Hardie brothers. The partnership was then terminated, and the late Mr. Rintoul then took up the Auburn Vale holding, comprising about 400 acres, from Mr. R. Hamersley. He subsequently acquired adjoining properties until the estate grew to 2,675 acres. In addition, a 1,500-acre selection in the nearby 14-Mile Brook territory was also brought under control. With sheep his objective, the owner set out on an extensive programme of improvements, embracing miles of rabbit and sheep proof netting, water conservation, extensive clearing, preparation of pasture land, and many other items. Planning was on methodical lines, the desire being to establish the holding on sound and systematic lines worthy of the great future which Mr. Rintoul predicted for the Great Southern districts as sheep country. Auburn Vale stud was founded in 1907 by the purchase of 300 ewes and a number of stud rams from Illareen stud, Katanning. In later years importations of breeding stock were made from the well-known Millbrae (South Australia) stud, including a sire that in 1934 took second award in the Melbourne Sheep Show. In 1935, 25 stud ewes were imported for Auburn Vale, and recently another high-grade sire (first prize in hogget strong wool section at Adelaide last year) was added. All these importations were from Millbrae. Rintoul brothers now shear about 2,300 sheep annually, and the clip holds a very high reputation. There is keen demand for sires from this stud, and the prestige gained is being jealously guarded by these progressive young settlers. Many excellent horses of varying types are on the property, and it is noteworthy that large teams are utilised in farm operations in preference to the now more popular mechanical methods in vogue elsewhere. There is also a fine dairy herd on the holding. Auburn Valley is a property that brings credit to the memory of its founder and also embodies the wide agricultural knowledge with which the sons are endowed.
