The Advertiser Monday 28 Feb 1938 BOY DROWNED IN TORRENS Third Fatality in Family The drowning of Barry Leane, about 11, of Smith street, Southwark, in the River Torrens on Saturday morning, was the third fatal accident in the family. The boy's fathe,. Lawrence Leane, a gardener, of Mount Compass, was killed in an aeroplane crash near Victor Harbor a few years ago. About a year before this, a large truck, driven by the father, had run over and killed his daughter, Dorothy, on her third birthday. When the widow, Mrs. Dorothy Leane, returned home about 10 a.m. on Saturday from cleaning offices, she found that her youngest son, Barry, was missing, with his bathers and scooter. Sent down to the river to investigate, the other son, Kenneth, 14, found his brother's clothes and a scooter on the river bank. Dragging operations by Water Constables Baddams and Wortley resulted in the recovery of the boy's body during the afternoon in about 3 ft. 6 in. of water in the river basin, behind the weir. The boy was wearing bathers. It was stated that the boy was small, not robust, and could swim only a little.
