A BABY RUN OVER,
TRAGEDY AT MOUNT COMPASS
Backing a motor truck near his home on Saturday, Mr. Lawrence A. Leane ran over his three-year- old daughter, with fatal results.
A distressing accident occurred at Mount Compass about noon on Saturday, when the three-year-old daughter of Mr. Lawrence A. Lease was run over by a motor track, sustaining fatal injuries. Mr. Leane is a market gardener, and he uses the truck in connection with his business and also to carry passengers to Adelaide. On Saturday he was carting material from garden and he was backing the truck in preparation for another trip to Willunga. Mr. Leane's two elder children, Kenneth (4) and Dorothy (3), were playing in the yard, and were not close to the vehicle when their father started the engine. As he backed Mr. Leane felt a wheel pass over some obstruction, but he thought it was a stone. Looking out from the driver's seat he was horrified to see his daughter lying on the ground motionless. A wheel had passed over her head. She was unconscious, and no cry was heard when she was struck. The child was taken in haste to Willunga for medical attention, but she died shortly after arrival at the doctor's. The little girl was buried on Sunday from the home of her grandfather, Mr. Charles Hawke, of Torrensville. It was the child's third birthday on Saturday.
