Page 8 ADVERTISER PI May-June 1966 Spent 46 years On Newspapers Ivan John Anderson "Andy" to his contemporaries, retired from The Griffin Press on Thursday, June 23 due to ill-health. Andy commenced his apprenticeship at "The Register" on August 9, 1920 and completed it on November 9, 1925. He received 15/- a week to start and in his final year was getting the huge sum of £2/7/6. In those days apprentices worked six nights a week - from Sunday till Friday - right from the time their apprenticeship commenced. The overtime rate was staggering, three-pence-farthing an hour for a first year boy and trade school was four hours employers' time and two hours of your own. When working at night the position was reversed and it was four hours of your time and two hours of the boss's. Three-pence worth of fruit got you an apple, orange and banana. Some of Andy's workmates were the now Managing Director, Mr McFarling; Ted Bray, now Managing Editor, Brisbane "Courier"; Norm Copley and Jimmy Morcom. On completion of his time, Andy went to Loxton to get outside experience and in February, 1926 started at the Mt. Barker "Courier" as a linotype operator. The "Courier" was owned by C.M.R. Dumas (father of Sir Lloyd) and Andy stayed for a lengthy spell - 1926 to 1938. He married a Mt. Barker girl, Vera Crouch on January 28, 1933 and for the record, they're still together. They had one daughter and are now the fond grandparents of three. Andy decided on a move from Mt. Barker and on November 26, 1938, began work at The Advertiser Printing Office (which was to become The Griffin Press. The only linotype operators were Norm Copley, Nev. Rowell and himself. Some of the comps. were: "Snuffer" Backhouse (Grandfather of John Backhouse), Bob Phillips and Perc. Hammond; Binding; Arch McLean, Milton Nettle and Archie Ray; Machine Room: Viv Venning, Hughie White and Bill Paris. "Uncle" Bill Adams was foreman and Mr Dunstan the manager. After the war he (with Jimmy Morcom) went on to night work and, after the move to Netley, when his health began to trouble him, he shifted to day work where he's been ever since. Not a bad record for someone whose father said he would sooner cut his hands off than let him enter the printing trade. Andy was presented with a pen and pencil set at an informal gathering on his last day and wished a long and happy retirement.
