SISTER IN ITALY
AT "MOST ADVANCED POST"
A Matamata nurse, Sister Mona Cannell, is at present serving at a post in Italy which according to the medical officer in charge is the most advanced ever to be manned by nursing sisters. Advice to this effect has been received by Sister Cannell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Cannell, of Hinuera, Matamata.

Sister Cannell has been overseas for three years with the New Zealand Nursing Division. Although the period of service with the casualty clearing station is nominally six months, Sister Cannell was there for eight months. For part of that time with another sister Sister Cannell was honoured by being specially selected to go to the advanced aid post to nurse cases too dangerous to be moved.

Wounded Arrive at the MDS and CCS (page 322)

. . . Since abdominal cases would hardly have survived the trip by this route, they were retained at the MDS at Atessa. Several of these serious cases were being held, and on 1 December the CCS sent forward two nursing sisters, Sisters Simpson(2) and Cannell,(3) to provided the special post-operative nursing that these patients required. This was the first time that sisters had worked in an active MDS. The sisters (Sister Ussher(4) replacing Sister Simpson) remained at the MDS for three weeks. . .
