MR. HENRY LANCE HUGHES
Mr. Henry Lance Hughes, who passed away at the Port Augusta Hospital on August 24, was one of the pioneers of the North. Born at Leederville, W.A., in 1852, he left his home at the age of nine years and worked his passage to this State as cabin boy on a boat. After spending three years at the Barrier, he came to Port Augusta and worked for many years on stations in the Gawler Ranges, later doing contract work, tank sinking and fencing. In 1877 he married Miss Elizabeth Mary Roberts, of England, who came to Australia as lady's companion to Mrs. Ernest Leycester, whose husband owned stations in the Gawler Ranges at that time. Mr. Hughes later came to Port Augusta where he had a butchering business for a time. The spirit of adventure urged him to go north to Angipinna gold rush whence he went to Mount Lyndhurst station, where he remained for twelve years. He was assistant overseer at the station at one period when 100,000 sheep were shorn. Mr. Hughes was recognised in the north as an excellent judge of sheep and was an expert at counting and drafting. He was also a good horse man. From Mount Lyndburst station Mr. Hughes and his family came to Port Augusta, where the family remained while deceased went to the Tarcoola goldfields. After spending two years at Tarcoola Mr. Hughes and his two sons went to the Arltunga gold rush in Central Australia, but again fortune did not favor him. After three years on the fields he went to cattle stations in the vicinity of Alice Springs, later going with Mr. P.L. Cavanagh, a pioneer sheep squatter of Central Australia. Deceased remained in the Alice Springs district for over 20 years, before returning to Port Augusta, where he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Hughes' wife died in 1920; his eldest son was killed in Queensland in 1933; his eldest daughter died suddenly on June 30 and his second son and youngest daughter reside in Port Augusta. Mr. Hughes was the oldest member of the Forresters' Lodge in this district. The funeral was conducted at the local cemetery on the morning of August 25, Rev. Canon E. Robinson officiating at the graveside.
