Exercise is an essential part of Keith Wing's life. The 82 year old practically lives in his sneakers and is not often caught with his feet up. An active table tennis player, Mr Wing was one of the people responsible for starting the walking group known as the Timaru Wanderers Club. In 2000 he stepped down as president of the club to become involved in another passion, sequence dancing. "A woman who walked with us asked if I would teach a group dancing. I don't know why she picked me," he laughed. Mr Wing accepted the invitation and hasn't looked back. It's very social and unlike ballroom dancing is not competitive."Mr Wing and dancing partner Pam Robertson called the group the Timaru WR Dancers (W standing for Wing and R standing for Robertson). The small group gather every Tuesday night in the Woodlands Road Church Hall.
Mr Wing said numbers had dwindled over the years but they still welcomed interested parties. "We have a few couples who want to learn to dance for their wedding and we take a group of children on a Friday morning. "We teach them the basics, and not just to stand in the corner and jiggle." Mr Wing said dancing not only kept him fit but made him use his brain. A teacher at Waimataitai Primary School for 30 years, Mr Wing has dedicated many hours to different organisations and clubs since retiring in 1980, with Probus and Scouting New Zealand among the many. Local swimmers have also benefited from his involvement with the North End Swimming Club. Mr Wing and a few of his friends still go walking once a week but its not just a stroll around the block, but devoting an entire day to exercise. "I think keeping active is essential." he said.
