The West Australian Saturday 10 October 1936 ALBANY IDENTTY DEAD. Link with Early Settlement. ALBANY, Oct. 9. Mr. Robert Trail Muir, a member of a family associated with Albany and district since the early days of settlement, died yesterday at Fremantle, where he was spending a holiday. Born here 76 years ago, he was from early manhood until 1912 connected with the firm of A. Muir and Sons, general merchants, which was founded by his grandfather, Mr. Andrew Muir in 1866. This firm was the first to serve the vessels of the P. and O. Line when Albany was made the port of call and also enjoyed an extensive connection with other callers here. Mr. Andrew Muir came to the State from Fifeshire (Scotland) in the sailing vessel Ganges in 1844, and settled at Cape Riche on the coast east of Albany, later going to Hay River and Forrest Hill, near Mt. Barker. Much of the country adjacent to the port was pioneered by members of the Muir family, all of whom could recount stories of hardship and trials associated with early settlement. The late Mr. Muir retired from business In 1912 and had since lived at the original home of the family in Earl-street. He was associated with many public bodies and lodges. A widow, son and daughter survive him. His father and a brother were former mayors of Albany and he served as a councillor. The flag was flown at half mast at the Town Hall when news of his death was received.

Mr. Muir was formerly a member of the Albany Municipal Council. Friendly Society affairs occupied his attention, and he was a member of the old Loyal Albany Lodge, M.U.I. O.O.F. He was also a member of the Masonic craft forbears and an old member of Lodge Plantagenet, No. 1454, E.C. He leaves a widow, one son and one daughter and two grandchildren to mourn their loss.
