The Argus (Melbourne)Thursday 25 August 1932 ERRATIC DRIVER FINED. Four hours were occupied at the St. Kilda Court on Wednesday in the hearing of a case in which Thomas H. Connard, aged 43 years, Albert street, Mordialloc, was charged with having driven a motor-car while under the influence of liquor. Norman Richard Nelson, labourer, Princes street, Springvale, said that about 1 o'clock on the morning of August 6 he was driving a horse and lorry along Point Nepean road, Elsternwick. He saw a motor-car being driven erratically towards him. There was a collision, in which witness was injured. The car was on the wrong side of the road, and was driven by Connard. Dr. W. B. Vance, who examined Connard at a quarter past 2 o'clock on August 6, expressed the opinion that Connard was under the influence of liquor. Connard said that before the accident he had been at a meeting, where he had had not more than three glasses of ale. When he left the meeting he was perfectly sober. Immediately before the impact occurred he swerved to avoid a cyclist. He was suffering from nerves. Connard was fined £10. A stay of 14 days was allowed.
