Greymouth Evening Star 1955 "This man has received his own punishment," commented the Magistrate, Mr.R.M.Grant SM, when a 70 year old man, J.Griffin, of Ahaura, was charged in the Magistrate's Court at Greymouth this morning with attempting to board a train while it was still in motion. It is stated that the defendant had alighted from a train at Ngahere on May to speak to a bus driver. While he was talking the train began to move and he attempted to board it by grabbing at the guard's van. He slipped and fell between the train and the platform, but the guard had seen the incident and applied the emergency brake bringing the train to a immediate standstill to avoid a serious accident. "It was just the foolish act of a 70-year-old man," said Mr.W.D. Taylor, appearing for the defendant, who was convicted and fined 10s, with 13s costs and 2 pounds 2s solicitors fees.
