FATALITIES AND ACCIDENTS.
A DEATH AT ADELAIDE 'HOSPITAL.
An inquest into the circumstances of the death of Susannah Elliott, aged 63 years, from syncope while undergoing an operation at the Adelaide Hospital, was conducted at the Adelaide Police Court building on Tuesday afternoon by the Acting City Coroner (Mr. F. C. Seikmann).
Annie Oakley, of Clarence Park, identified the body of deceased as that of Susannah Elliott, the witness' sister-in-law, who resided at McLaren Flat.
Dr. Williarn A. Giles, consulting surgeon at the Adelaide Hospital, stated that the deceased came under his notice at 9.30 a.m. on Monday.
The Coroner-You were not called specially to see her.
The Witness-No. She was taken to the operating theatre. He considered the operation necessary, and the open ether method was adopted. The operation proceeded satisfactorily until just after the witness had removed the gallstones, when she quite suddenly showed signs of collapse. Immediately efforts to recuscitate her were adopted, but the patient died.
Dr. M. M. George, president medical officer at the hospital, said the deceased was admitted at about 6 p.m. on Sunday, and she was not in any need of immediate attention. She became worse towards morning, and later her condition became more serious. The witness decided that an operation was immediately necessary. In his opinion death was due to sudden heart failure.
Dr. G. R. West, medical superintendent, certified that he examined the heart of the deceased, and considered it rather weak for operation. He administered the anaesthetic.
Dr. R. A. Haste, resident medical officer, said the operation had proceeded satisfactorily for about half an hour, when the deceased collapsed.
The Coroner-It is necessary in all cases of deaths occurring under an anaesthetic that a full enquiry be made to see that all proper precautions were taken and that the rules of the institution where it occurred were duly followed. It is recognised in the Adelaide Hospital rules that life might be endangered by the waiting for the consent of the relatives to a highly necessary operation, and it is provided that where it is not possible to obtain a relative's consent the life of the patient is not to be endangered by delay for this purpose. In this case Dr. Giles, the senior professional man present, considered it necessary that an immediate operation be performed. This was done, and the verdict will be that the deceased came to her death at the Adelaide Hospital on September 13 from syncope.
