The Daily Colonist & Victoria Daily Times Friday 11 August 1922; Victoria, B.C., Canada (Images: 9611-14 & 9642) Obituary Notice: GUNTER -Mr. William Gunter passed away at the family residence, Shawnigan Lake, yesterday morning, where he had resided for the past eight years, having been a resident of the Province for thirty-five years and of the city for twenty-seven years. Deceased was born in Middlesex, England, and was aged sixty-five years. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow at Shawnigan Lake, a sister and brother in England, two brothers in Australia, and a brother, Mr. S. Gunter, residing at 169 Beach Drive, Oak Bay. The late Mr. Gunter was a member of Alexandria Lodge, Sons of England. The remains are reposing at the B.C. Funeral Co. Chapel, where the funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in Ross Bay Cemetery.
The Daily Colonist Saturday 12 August 1922; Victoria, B.C., Canada (Images: 9638 & 39) Military Funeral - The Army and Navy Veterans will provide a gun carriage and a firing squad to do honor to the late William Gunter, whose death at Shawnigan Lake on Thursday was reported in yesterday's issue. The Sons of England, of which organization Mr. Gunter was a member, will also be represented at the funeral. Mr. Gunter was a member of a family with a fine military record, four brothers having served in the Imperial army and two in the navy. Mr. Gunter was eight years in the Royal Engineers and saw service at Majuba Hill, in the Egyptian campaign of 1882. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock today from the B.C. Funeral Parlors.
The Daily Colonist Sunday 13 August 1922; Victoria, B.C., Canada (Images: 9607-8; 9609-10) Funeral Service: GUNTER - The remains of Mr William Gunter were laid to rest yesterday afternoon with full military honours. The funeral service at the B.C. Funeral Chapel at 2 o'clock. The service at the Chapel and graveside were conducted by the Rev. Col Andrews. The casket, draped with the Union Jack, was taken to the cemetery on the gun carriage, in charge of Sergt. Cooney from Work Point Barracks. The hymns sung were "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide with Me." The Rose of England service at the graveside was conducted by Brother G.H. Pledger, president, assisted by Brother E.W. Howlett, chaplain. The customary three volleys were fired over the grave by a firing party from Work Point Barracks in charge of Sgt. C. M. Dunlop and Bugler Hessleton sounded the "Last Post." The following members of the Sons of England were pallbearers: Brothers J. Smith, G.J. Bayliss, H.C. Lane, F.R. Robbins, G.W. Carey and W. Appleby. There was a very nice attendance of friends and many floral offerings were sent. Interment was made in Ross Bay Cemetery.
