Barrier Miner (Broken Hill) Saturday 16 September 1933 DEATH OF MR. G. N. MATTHEWS Mr. George Nicholas Matthews, who died suddenly at Stirling, South Australia, at the age of 62 years, was a well-known resident of Broken Hill. He was born at Carcoar, New South Wales. Mr. Matthews came to the Barrier in 1898, being employed on the staff of Kidman Bros., first as clerk, then as accountant, and ultimately holding the position of manager for several years until he left Broken Hill to live in retirement at Glenelg about 8 years ago. In his younger days Mr. Matthews was a keen sportsman. A good runner himself, he took an active interest as an officer of the old Barrier Ranges Athletic Association, while he also identified himself with several of the city's activities, occupying a seat on the directorate of the old Barrier Boys' Brigade, and was for several years secretary of the Barrier Masonic Lodge. In 1900 Mr. Matthews married Miss Margaret Henderson, of Sydney, who survives him. There are two daughters - Mrs. H. W. Broadbent and Mrs. A. N. Freebairn and two grandchildren, Margaret and Ian Broadbent.
