The Register Thursday 20 December 1923 LOCOMOTIVE CHARGEMAN KILLED. TEROWIE, December 19.- Mr. William Gage, a chargeman in the Locomotive Department of the railways, was killed this morning. Mr. Gage was shunting trucks of coal, with the assistance of a towrope from the shunt engine to the truck. Having started the trucks, he attempted to uncouple the tow from the truck, with the other end still on the engine, and the coupling would not come off. The engine was stationary, and as the trucks were moving the rope tightened, with, such force as to jamb Mr. Gage between the tow and the truck, crushing him so severely that he died. Deceased had about 30 years' service, and had lived in Terowie for 12 years. He was to have begun his annual leave next week. A widow and three sons are left.
