The Register (Adelaide) Tuesday 1 Dec 1903
Fatal Gun Accident
CHERRY GARDENS. November 29.
Frederick Lewis, aged 11, second son of Mr. Caleb Lews, was accidentally shot dead on Saturday afternoon. His brother Harry, aged 14, states that he and his brother were told to go into the orchard to shoot birds. Three or four minutes later a report of a gun was heard from the direction of the gate. The weapon was a muzzle loader. The victim, it appears, was blowing into the gun and the other lad was fixing the cap, or else while running by he struck the gun, which caused it to explode. The charge entered the mouth, and traversing the base of the brain passed out at the back. Death was instantaneous. An inquest, was considered unnecessary.
