John Hayward Shaughnessy of Glencoe, has been selected for the Vansittart Scholarship, which is tenable for three years at St. Peter's College, Adelaide. An officer of, Bagot Trustee Company was in Mount Gambier some weeks ago interviewing students for the selection.
Border Watch (Mt Gambier) Tuesday 8 April 1952 Promising Student's Death John Shaughnessy, Aged 20. John Hayward Shaughnessy, 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas P. Shaughnessy of Mypolonga, died early on Sunday morning at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, having been admitted to that institution a few days prevously. John was well known in Mount Gambier and Glencoe where his father was teaching. Following a successful term at the Mount Gambier High School where he was Dux of the Intermediate class in 1946, John was awarded the Vansittart Schol- arship which entitled him to attend St. Peter's College for three years. While at St. Peter's he secured a further scholarship to take him to Adelaide University and St. Mark's College to continue his studies in Agricultural Science. A funeral service was held at St. Peter's Cathedral yesterday afternoon at which Canon Docker of St. Mark's and Dr. A. Grenfell Price, of the University paid tribute to the character and ability of a promising young student. Besides his parents he leaves an elder brother, Peter, and a sister, Wendy. Mr. Reg Blackmore, Compton, and his mother, Mrs. P. C. Blackmore, who had been close friends of the family at Glencoe, attended the funeral service.
