Otautau Standard and Wallace County Chronicle, Volume XXVI, Issue 1300, 6 January 1931, Page 3 OBITUARY. Matthew Buchanan Poultney. On Sunday 4th inst., there passed away at his residence, Main Street, North Otautau, at an age approaching the four score years, another of Southland's pioneers, in the person of Mr Matthew B. Poultney. Deceased was born in Glasgow, where he spent his schooldays and where his father was foreman, in a large ironworks, known as "Dickson's Blazes," Young Poultney decided that overseas held more prospects than his native city and he set sail for New Zealand in the sailing ship "Merry Band"[sic] ("Mary Bond") landing at Port Chalmers in 1874. His first two years were spent at casual work with relatives and former, acquaintances, who had come out to the Colony prior to himself. In 1876 he migrated to Invercargill and became a sawmill engine-driver. As Mat Poultney, he became well known at various mills as a most conscientious and reliable driver. He has stoked up the mill engines that have provided the power to put many millions of feet of timber through Southland Sawmills. In 1881 he married Miss Ellen Smith, the ceremony being performed by the late Rev. Jno. Ferguson in First Church, Invercargill. During the succeeding 30 years the family resided at Seaward Bush, Isla Bank, Fairfax and Otautau. Mr and Mrs Poultney brought up a large family of thirteen, of which there were ten daughters and three sons, only one of whom; a son, has predeceased his father. Deceased is survived by his wife and the following members of his family:-Sons, Robert Takahopa) James (Rangiora), and, daughters, Mrs Smoothey (Waipori), Mrs J. Griffin (Tarakohe, Nelson), Mrs Donald (Tuatapere), Mrs Eade (Invercargill), Mrs Brice (Lady Barkley), Mrs C. Thomas (Otautau), Mrs R. Thomas, (Otautau) Mrs McCrae (Poukino), Mrs Warren (Monowai), Mrs Robertson (Takaka, Nelson). There are also 70 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Notwithstanding his advancing years, Mr Poultney devoted a lot of time to working in the garden and right up to the last found a great deal of pleasure working among vegetables and flowers. His garden was always clean and tidy to indicate his industry. The interment takes place to-morrow in the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill. The sympathy of a wide circle goes out to his sorrowing widow and the members of his family.
