Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954) Thu 28 Jul 1938 Obituary: Mr. W. H. Duke Mr. William Henry Duke, 76, who died recently at Blyth, was born at Penwortham, and was the second son of the late Mr. Thomas Clay Duke, who arrived in the E.I. merchantman Coromandel, on January 13, 1837. He began to learn his trade as a wheel wright at Moonta, afterwards complet ing his training with Messrs. Bremner and Growden, at Auburn. He was entrusted with work which gained prizes at shows and while still a young man had gained a reputation for skilled and thorough workmanship. Among the places where he worked are Farrells Flat, Port Wakefield, Hoyleton, and Edithburgh. Relinquishing business on the Peninsula, he settled at Blyth in charge of Mr. J. Videon's coachbuilding department, afterwards being mostly engaged in waggon building for Messrs. Buzacott, Wiltshire and Blyth Implement Company. His wife, who survives, is a daughter of the late Mr. George Overton, of Penwortham. Mr. Duke was a member of the Court Bushman's Home, one of the pioneer lodges of the A.O.O. Foresters. The following are survivors of a family of nine: - Messrs. Ernest G. Duke, Port Neil; Stanley H. Duke, Largs Bay; Allen A. and Albert F., Blyth; Mesdames Geo. Lee, Ballarat, Victoria; W. Robins, Clare; and H. Lynch, Woodville. There are 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A sister is Mrs. E. Humphrys, Wattle Flat, and Messrs. F. Duke, Ardrossan, A. T. Duke, Penwortham, and Albert E Duke, Northam, W.A., are brothers.
