Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Broadbent.
The death of Mrs. Elisabeth Ann Broad bent. which occurred on Monday last week, at tne Gawler Hospital, has removed an old and a highly esteemed resident of Prospect Hill. The deceased, with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Griggs, and two brothers, came to Australia in the ship Lord Raglan, and arrived here on her twelfth birthday anniversary February 11, 1856. The family settled at Clarendon, and later removed to Prospect Hill. She married the late Mr. John Spen cer, of Clarendon, who died at an' early age, leaving her three little boys to provide for. At Prospect Hill a schooihouse was built, and she then started teaching the children in the neighbourhood, in this way supporting her children. Later she married Mr. William Maidment, of Ashbourne, who died after suffering for years as the result of an accident. Again she returned to her old home at Prospect Bill, and later was married to the late Mr. John Broadbent, whose comradeship she had for only three months. Mrs. Broadbent was ever ready to help others. In cases of sickness she was at her beet, and displayed great ability as a nurse. In earlier years Broadbent was an active worker for the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She also took a keen part in church, Sunday school, and Christian Endeavour work.

Australian Christian Commonwealth (SA : 1901 - 1940) Fri 14 Oct 1921
MRS. ELIZABETH ANN BROADBENT, late of Prospect Hill and Williamstown, who passed away on September 19, 1921, at Gawler Hospital, was the only daughter,of the late Wm. Griggs, and came from Rushton, Northamptonshire, England, with her parents and brothers in the ship "Lord Raglan," arriving on her twelfth birthday, February 12, 1856. With her parents she lived at Clarendon, and later removed to Prospect Hill. In 1867 she was married to the late John Spencer and lived at Clarendon. After a short married life her husband died, and with her three little boys she came to her brother at Prospect Hill and taught the children in the neighbourhood, and in this way supported her children. Later she married the late Wm. Maidment, of Ashbourne, and for years filled a mother's place to his family, and to-day her memory is revered by them. After Mr. Maidment's death she returned to her home at Prospect Hill, and until a few months before her death she made a home for the teachers of the public school. One who lived with her longest said "To know her was to love and admire her sterling character. During this time she married the late John Broadbent, of whom she was bereaved at the end of three months. Many can speak of her wonderful ability in sickness. She ministered both to body and soul with a wealth of tenderness. In the Church, the Sunday school and the Women's Christian Temperance Union she assisted with her whole soul in the work, and till about twelve months ago she regularly attended to her class in Sunday school. Early in the year she went to live with her son at Williamstown. Medical and hospital assistance was given, but she was called into higher service. On September 20, in the presence of a large assemblage of relatives and friends, the body was laid to rest in the Meadows cemetery, the service being conducted by the Rev. C. E. Sanders. An In Memoriam service was held on Sunday, September 25, in the Prospect Hill church. Two of her sons are still living: they have become in every way worthy citizens of our country. The Rev. Eric Ingamells writes: "The late Mrs. Broadbent, of Prospect Hill, was for many years one of the most devoted workers in the Meadows circuit. She was a power for good in the Church and neighbourhood and upon the young people especially. Her interest in Foreign Missions was regularly shown by her well-filled mercy box each year. She was representative of the old Puritan type, with a very sensitive conscience and a passion for righteousness. Many of the young men and women of Prospect Hill are more earnest Christians through her consistent Christian influence."
