A YOUTH'S LAPSE.
Bicycle Bell Stolen.
In consequence of a report that a bicycle bell had been stolen from Jolly's boatshed, Detectives Halden and Gill interviewed Leonard Nelson White (19) at his home, Rosina street, Adelaide, at 5.15 p.m. on Monday, and questioned him to find whether he knew anything of the missing article. After a few questions White asked to be excused for a minute. As he was leaving Detective Gill noticed something projecting in the lad's pocket, and stopped him. On searching the pocket the missing bell was found, but White refused to answer questions concerning it. On the following day, however, while at the City Watchhouse, he confessed he stole the bell. Such was the evidence given in the Adelaide Police Police Court on Tuesday morning, when White was charged with having stolen the bell. He pleaded guilty.

Detective Sgt. Allchurch, who prosecuted, said that in 1920 the defendant had been sent to the Reformatory for stealing a bicycle.

At this stage an elderly man, who said he was the boy's stepfather, told the Court that since the boy had been under his care he had been most upright and thoroughly good. He was sure be must have been suddenly tempted. Not one day since he started work had he been out of work. He was to have gone to Horsham (Victoria) the following day, and he would be greatly indebted if the Court could release him with a fine and allow him to go to Horsham.

Mr E. M. Sabine, S.M., said he would give the defendant a chance to go to Victoria. He would be released with a fine this time, but if he came before the Court again he could not expect such leniency. A fine of £3, and 10/ costs, was imposed.
