Forbes Advocate (NSW) Tuesday 11 June 1940 DR. BROADBENT'S DEATH Forbes' Oldest Medical Practitioner Sudden End Last Saturday. Although the condition of his heart it was known to members of his family and his medical advisers, very few of his large circle of friends were aware that Dr. Percy Lewis Brondbent, whose death occurred at Forbes, at the age of 62 years, was in anything but the best of health, except for a cold from which he had been suffering for a few days. Therefore, the news of his death, which took place at his home between 4.30 and 4.45 p.m. on Saturday, came as a very great shock to the community, among whom expressions of sympathy for his widow and family were heard on every hand over the week-end. The doctor attended to his usual round of duties on Saturday including a Visit to the District Hospital, and the passing of half-a-dozen men who had offered their services for overseas during the day. The late Dr. Broadbent came to Forbes just on 38 years ago, and by his gentlemanly demeanor quickly won the hearts of all with whom he came in contact. In the intervening years he built up an extensive practice. He at once became an honorary medical officer to Forbes District Hospital, and for years he has labored unceasingly to advance the Interest of that institution, which mude many improvements in status during his lifetime. Upon the death of Dr. McDonnell, he also became Government Medical Officer, a position he has filled for many years. The doctor was also a keen sporting enthusiast, interesting himself in the affairs of the Forbes District Picnic Race Club, while he was a foundation member and former president of the Forbes Bowling Club, of which he was five times singles champion, and held the title within recent years. With his wife, he was also a strong adherent and liberal supporter uf the Church of England activities in our midst, particularly of its social life. In his younger years he was an active member of Forbes Golf Club. The deceased is survived by his sorrowing widow, one son, Dr. J. Broadbent of Crookwell, and one daughter, Miss Dorothy Broadbent, of Forbes. Reference to the passing of Dr. Broadbent was made by the Rev. A. E. White at the morning service at St. John's on Sunday and at 5 o'clock in the afternoon a special church service took place, at which the Rector officiated. Afterwards, members of the local Police Force, the Masonic Lodge, and Forbes Bowling Club marched in a funeral procession to the train, the body, being taken to Sydney to be cremated yesterday at Rookwood. (Mr. A. G. Jones directed the funeral arrangements at Forbes end.
