The Advertiser Wednesday 11 July 1917 CONFERRED. FIFTEEN NEW DOCTORS. There was a special congregation of the Adelaide University at the Prince of Wales theatre on Monday, when degrees chiefly of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery were conferred on candidates. The Chancellor (Sir George Murray), who presided, was supported by the Vice-Chancellor (Professor Mitchell), Professor Sir Edward Stirling, Professor Kerr Grant, and other members of the Senate and council, and the Warden of the Senate. Professor Stirling presented the candidates, and the Chancellor congratulated each, amid the cheers of the students. Degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery were conferred on the following: - Alan Reid Bean, Frank Howard Beare, Eric Elihu Broadbent, Hugh William Bell Cairns (Rhodes and Everard Scholar), Harold Whitridge Davies, Arthur Kyle Gault, John Bealey Gillen, Norman Bruce Hall, George Harry Kendrew, Guy Austin Lendon, Brian Formby Moore, Sydney O'Neill, James Alexander Rolland, Eric Lindsay Symons, John Newton Webb. The degree of Bachelor of Engineering and Diploma of Applied Science was conferred (in absentia) on Raydon Berry Smith. The Chancellor referred to the fine work done by doctors during the war. He said Dr. Cairns had enlisted in 1915, and returned in the following year to complete his course. He paid him a special tribute, as he wás both Rhodes and Everard Scholar, and had topped the lists. Dr. Davies had also enlisted, and been wounded, and Dr. Gault had shared the same fate in 1915. But they had returned, and successfully completed their course, and all the young staff were prepared to go out and do service. (Cheers.) On no class in the Empire had military duty fallen more heavily than upon the medical profession, and none had taken-up the burden more cheerfully. Six of the teachers had gone to the front, and in order to meet the extra strain the remaining teachers had gone on from term to term without vacation. Out of 25 eligible men all but one had enlisted, and three had gained the Military Cross (Cheers.) One (Dr. Burden) had given his life. He wished the ex-students God speed, and said he knew they would uphold the honor of their land and win distinction. (Cheers.)
Eric married Dorothy Mary WINDLE [2746] [MRIN: 920], daughter of John George WINDLE [7613] and Flora CHAFFER [7614], on 19 Oct 1917 in Methodist Parsonage, Petersburgh, South Australia.
