Obituary:
JAMES CARTWRIGHT GEORGE:
yETAT 62.
One of the oldest and best known businessmen of New Plymouth passed away this morning in the person or Mr James Cartwright, after a painful and lingering illness, at the age of 62 years. Mr George was a native of Roxton, Bedfordshire, England, where his father had a coach factory. The family came to New Zealand in 1857 and settled at New Plymouth, where the subject of notice learned the building and cabinet-making trade under Mr Watson. In 1869 Mr George established himself in a similar business on his own account, and was very successful. About 1887 he disposed of the business and went into the dairy industry, first establishing a factory in Tikorangi and afterwards in partnership with Mr Newton King and another, founding the Crown Dairy company. The third partner soon disposed of his interest to Mr Richard Cock, and these three, entering into the enterprise with great energy and spirit, soon made the Crown Dairy Company the largest dairying concern in the province, if not in the colony. Mr George undertook the active management of the company's affairs, and was largely responsible for the success achieved, but his health breaking down he was compelled to take a long holiday, visiting England in 1895. On, his return he continued to take a large share in the direction of the affairs of the company and continued to so until quite recently, when illness prevented him from taking any active part and he lived a comparatively retired life. A few months ago he planned another trip to England for the benefit of his health, and in November he actually started on the journey, but on reaching Hawera he was so ill that his doctor advised his return home, where he shortly afterwards underwent an operation, which relieved his malady for the time being but could effect no permanent benefit. Since then he has gradually failed in strength waiting patiently for the end, which came at an early hour this morning. One of the soundest business men of the town, his services were freely given to his fellow-citizens and he has filled many public and semi-public positions. He represented the ratepayers of the New Plymouth Harbour Board for two years, and was for a long time a director or the Sash and Door Factory and Timber Company, and the Taranaki Land, Building and Investment Society. He was an old member of the Freemason Order, being past master of the craft, and was also for many years a director of the Loyal Excelsior Lodge of Odd-fellows. As trustee of the Grey Institute he enjoyed the confidence of the Wesleyan body, of which he was at one time an active member. During the Maori wars he served with the Taranaki Rifle Volunteer and afterwards Atkinson's Company of Bushrangers. Other more or less public positions he has held at various times were the Presidency of the Chamber of Commerce, the New Plymouth Bowling Club, the Mutual Improvement Society etc. In fact, he was always ready to help forward any movement for the commercial and social well-being of the town and district. Beneath a somewhat brusque manner he concealed a kind and sympathetic heart, and there are many who will regret the loss in him of a good friend and companion. He was married three time and leaves a large family, most of whom are grown up.

OBITUARY.
Passing of a Pioneer Colonist
Mr James C. George
Mr James Cartwright George, of New Plymouth, one of its early residents and one of its most successful and best known commercial men, passed away on Wednesday morning after a, protracted illness. He has been for a long period connected with the dairying industry of the province, and in the town of New Plymouth itself filled in a most capable manner many important public and semi-public positions. In 1887 he disposed of his cabinet-making and entered the dairying industry. With Messrs Newton King and P. Dignan he formed the Crown Dairy Company. Mr Dignan left the district shortly afterwards and disposed of his share to Mr Oliver Samuel, who in turn sold his share to Mr Richard Cock. The Crown pushed its business and soon grew to be the largest dairying concern in the colony, with operations all over Taranaki and of late in the Pahiatua district. Mr George was an energetic man and so were his two partners, and success followed success. Keen in business matters, with sound judgment, his management was responsible for a. good deal of prosperity of the concern, but the strain told on his health, and he was compelled to take a rest; so in 1595 he journeyed to England. His return to New Plymouth saw him again immersed in commercial and civic- affairs and his energetic career continued up till less than a year ago, when illness laid him aside. Convalescing, he decided on another trip to England, and in November made a start. On reaching Hawera, he became very seriously ill, and had to return home. An operation gave temporary relief, but this malady was of a premature nature. At the time of his death Mr George was Presidents of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, and had for a time been connected with many other local institutions, notably the Taranaki Land Building and Investment Society. New Plymouth Sash and Door Factory, New Plymouth Bowling Club, trustee of the Grey Institute and local Excelsior Lodge of Oddfellows, and the Masonic fraternity. Some years ago he served a term as member of the New Plymouth Harbour Board, and for a long time past, his name has been associated with many of the forward movements of New Plymouth. In the early days he served with the Taranaki Rifle Volunteers and Atkinson's Bushrangers. Mr George was married three times, and leaves a large family, most of whom are grown up. He will be missed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.- Abridged from "Taranaki News."
