Norma Herchenrider worked in the GE lab in Schenectady, NY with Kurt Vonnegut in the early 1950s. Dick and Norma had four boys, John who was Greg's (Emmett's) age, Bob who was one year older than Bradley and the twins, Jim and Bruce, who were close in age to Karen.

Mr. Herchenrider earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University, served with the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville and a former member of Cave Spring Methodist Church of Roanoke.
