Dick and Norma Herchenrider were good friends of the Smiths. Dick Herchenrider and Al Smith both worked for General Electric in the Salem, VA plant as engineers. Norma Herchenrider worked in the GE lab in Schenectady, NY with Kurt Vonnegut in the early 1950s.
Dick and Norma had four boys, John who was Greg's (Emmett's) age, Bob who was one year older than Bradley and the twins, Jim and Bruce, who were close in age to Karen.

Richard Charles Herchenrider, 79, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the Laurels of Charlottesville. Born October 7, 1925 in Philadelphia, Penn., he was the son of the late Charles Herchenrider and Anne Summers Herchenrider. Mr. Herchenrider earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University, served with the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville and a former member of Cave Spring Methodist Church of Roanoke. Mr. Herchenrider worked for General Electric for 40 years in engineering and sales management which brought him and his family to Schenectady, N.Y., …
