50th Batt. A.I.F., HUGHES H.G. 4497, K. April 2nd, 1917. Det D/B He came over with me in the reinforcement for the 10th Battalion and was in A Coy, and I knew him well. I did not see him get killed on April 2nd, but I know for certain that he was buried by our own stretcher-bearers. It was at Noreuil and our stretcher-bearers brought him with others back a little way and buried them. JNA. Ref --- Pte Kenworthy. 4506. No. 16 Gen. Hospital, Le Treport. Sept 4th, 1917.
50th Batt. A.I.F., HUGHES H.G. 4497, "A" Coy, "K April 2nd, 1917. Det D&B" Hughes was buried by a party from the Coy., in the cemetery just outside Norieul with Joyce, Tucker, and Turpin. I was not present at the time, and doubt if a cross was erected over their graves, but quite certain about them being buried there." Witness: Francis R.S. (C.S.N.) 647. "A" Coy., 50th Batt. I was told by a Pioneer Corpl., whose name I forgot, that Hughes was buried outside the village of Noreuil, in the open, and there is a cross on the grave. I have written to his sister, Miss Lucy Hughes, Eastwood Terrace, Eastwood, Vis Adelaide, S.A. Informant: Pt. Osborne, S.A. 2564 50th Australians, A.Co., III.Pltn. formerly I. Pltn. He fell in No Mans' Land while we were advancing and I saw him lying on the ground dead. The others told me that death was instantaneous. We captured Noreuil that day and held it. I am sorry that I do not know where he was buried. I knew him well as we came over in the same boat." Eye-witness: Yes. Description: From S.
