General Notes:
North Argus (Clare) Friday 23 May 1941 BROTHER OF MRS. GORDON BAILS DIES AT OXFORD, ENGLAND. DIED ON THE DAY HE SHOULD HAVE BECOME AN OFFICER. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bails, of Clare, were recently notified that Mrs. Bails' brother (Mr. S. R. Herbert), the only son of Mr. N. S. and the late Mrs. Herbert, of Boar's Hill Hotel, near Oxford, England, had died suddenly after an operation. The 'Oxford Mail' of March 24, with reference to the deceased gentleman, says: - 'We regret to announce that Mr. Herbert was taken ill suddenly, brought to an Oxford nursing home on Friday morning, operated on on Sunday, for peritonitis, and died the same evening. It was the very day he should have taken a commission with the Scottish Command of Royal Engineers. He was educated at Oxford, first at the City of Oxford School and later at the University. He leaves a widow and an only son. For some time he had been living at Yew Tree Cottage, Winslow. He was, in civil life, district surveyor for the Bucks County Council in the Buckingham area. Mrs. Gordon Bails' father and mother (Mr. S. N. Herbert and the late Mrs. Herbert) spent a few weeks holiday in Clare in 1927 during a visit to Australia.
