bullet  General Notes:

1869 SA Birth HOPKINS William Bartlett John Bartlett HOPKINS Mary Ann HUGHES Adelaide 84/101

Western Champion (Parkes, NSW) Thursday 14 April 1921
DEATH OF MR. W. B. HOPKINS.
It is with deep regret we record the death of Mr. William Bartlett Hopkins, for several years the much respected manager of Messrs. R. S. Howard and Sons Ltd., which took place at his late residence, Currajong street, at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, 11th inst. The funeral took place the following afternoon, the cortege being a lengthy and representative one. Some 50 brethren of the Masonic Lodge, of which deceased was a Past Master, marched in front of the hearse, and six representatives of Messrs. Howard and Sons acted as pall-bearers. The Anglican burial service was impressively read by the Rev. R. Seymour Smith, the deceased's favourite hymn, "Abide with Me," being sung during the service. The Chaplain of the Masonic Lodge, Wor. Bro. W. F. Jackson, then read the Masonic service, and a funeral ode was sung by the brethren. The late Mr. Hopkins, who was 52 years of age, was born in Adelaide in 1869, and was married in Sydney in 1903. He came to Parkes some nine years ago to take charge of the grocery department of Messrs. R. S. Howard and Sons., and five years later was promoted to the position of general manager for the firm. An exceptionally experienced, capable and courteous business man he filled the position with much credit and gained a host of friends. Some 18 months ago he had a succession of heavy colds and a serious pulmonary attack followed which resulted in his death. In February last Mr. Hopkins' condition was so serious that he went to the seaside in the hopes of recuperating, but he gradually got worse, and returned home by car on the 6th inst., passing away a few days later as stated. Besides the widow a family of five (four boys and one girl), the eldest of whom is 17 and the youngest an infant of but two months, are left behind, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
