Border Chronicle (Bordertown) Friday 18 Sep 1936 THE LATE MR. R. J. MCLEAN Mr. Robert James McLean, who died with tragic suddenness at his home at Pooginagoric on Saturday, August 29, at the age of 40, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. L. McLean, of Bordertown. The late Mr. McLean started work at the age of 13, first in the employ of the late Mr. Harry Thomas, of Custon; then for the late Mr. E. W. Mattinson, of Pooginagoric; and also for Mr. E. H. Barratt. In 1916, at the age of 21, he enlisted and saw service with the 3rd Light Horse. Returning to Australia after the armistice, be bought the homestead of Mr. E. H. Barratt and married Jean, daughter of Mr. George and the late Mrs Makin, of Pooginagoric! There was one child of the marriage. Mr. McLean had studied wool classing, and sheep formed both his chief working interest, and his hobby. He was a descendant of one of the district's notable pioneer families. His grandfather, Ewen McLean, arrived in 1852. He is survived by his widow, two brothers, Messrs E. J. and N. McLean; and a sister, Mrs. E. B. Milne. Mr. McLean's untimely death is but another instance of war service having left a man with a shattered constitution, though to all outward appearance there seemed to be little amiss. Such deaths are occurring in the ranks of veterans of the Great War with a frequency which can be described at little short of alarming. It is becoming sadly apparent that many of those who saw active service with the A.I.F. have never recovered from the strain and privations which they had to endure.
