Some stirring speeches were made on Thursday evening at the farewell Social to Mr Bert Bolen, emphasising the necessity for the utmost efforts on the part of all in the matter of recruiting and of providing for the many demands made by the war. Enthusiasm was aroused by the announcement that two of the guests in the person of Messrs Kaveney and Conway were preparing to depart for the fighting line.

THE FIRST FIT DRAFT LEAVING ENGLAND.
(Per United Press Association.)
PALMERSTON NORTH, January 31. Sir James Allen, speaking at a function at the Soldiers' Club here to-night, said that the Marama, which arrived a few days ago, had made her last trip, and the Maheno, which was nearing England, would bring the remaining cot cases and seriously ill men. These two hospital ships would then have completed their great work of mercy. The first draft of fit and well men were leaving for New Zealand probably on Friday or Saturday. At the time of the signing of the armistice the New Zealand Division was the only division at the front which was up to its full strength. There was not an English, French, German, or any other division which had not been reduced. He admitted that the repatriation scheme was not perfect, but hoped that New Zealand's would be made the best yet. He appealed to the people to do their duty and to render every help possible to restore the soldiers to their normal avocations.

A LAND BUREAU.
FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS.
At Friday night's meeting of the Te Kuiti branch of tbe Returned Soldiers' Association Mr Kaveney suggested the establishment of a land bureau for returned soldiers, where they could get reliable information on land matters. A Member: We would need a permanent secretary on the spot. Mr Vernon (chairman): In Auckland and Hamilton they have land bureaux, which are really land agents' businesses run for the soldiers. The idea was that half the commission went to the association.
Sergt-Major Hathaway moved that the secretary be instructed to obtain infomation as to the working of the bureau in Auckland.
Mr Douglas seconded the motion, which was carried.
