Passenger List below for arrival in colony on 14 Dec 1840 Fairfield.

Quoted from: History of Cherry Gardens and its Early Families (published 1936)
"Mr and Mrs Joseph Lewis arrived in colony 30 April 1839 by the ship, Fairfield, the voyage occupying 6 mths. In 1846 they settled in Cherry Gardens purchasing their property from the afore-mentioned Mr. Hare paying £3 per acre. This land from the original settler is still occupied by a grandson Mr Harry Lewis; Mr & Mrs Joseph Thompson, also early settlers, lived directly west of Mr. Lewis, and during their residence here, Mr. Thompson was employed by Mr. Lewis, and reared a family of seven children on £1 per week."

The Fairfield made two arrivals in Port Adelaide - the first sailing left Liverpool 1 Nov 1838 arrived 4 May 1839 taking little over 6mths; the second sailing left Plymouth 30 July 1840 arriving 14 Dec 1840 taking approx 5mths. The captain of first voyage was Capt Abbott, the second voyage Capt Lee. It was thought by family that Joseph Lewis and family arrived on the earlier sailing as the first son born in colony was named Joseph Abbott Lewis in honour of Captain Abbott. However passenger records indicate they arrived in the second sailing.

Family memories were that they originally tried farming at Little Para nr Gawler, then rented land at Coromandel Valley before settling in the Cherry Gardens district in 1846.

After 1840 Joseph tried farming at Little Para, Nr Gawler, South Australia.
He rented land at Coromandel Valley.
Then in 1846 he purchased 80 acres at Cherry Gardens from Mr Hare paying £3 per acre; it was heavily wooded with red gums, wattles and native cherry trees. After clearing the land he grew crops of wheat, oaten hay, peas, potatoes, fruit trees, and dairying. Some years later a further 80 acres purchased which was divided between his sons Joseph Abbot Lewis and Caleb Lewis.

DEATH OF A CENTENARIAN.
CHERRY GARDENS, March 2.
Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis, widow of the late Mr. Joseph Lewis, died to-day. She had attained the age of 100 years and a day. Mrs. Lewis came to South Australia with her husband in the ship Fairfield, in 1840. They spent six years in Adelaide, and on the Little Para, prior to settling at Cherry Gardens, where they bought land. They engaged in wheat and hay growing, cattle raising, and dairying until about 18 years ago, when Mr. Lewis passed away at the age of 80. Mrs. Lewis, notwithstanding her great age, had a remarkably vivid memory of events, her sight and hearing were unimpaired until a few years since, but her understanding remained good to the last. Until, quite recently she had been able to get about. A fortnight ago signs of breaking up occurred. The children now living are Mrs. Bales, of Alberton; Mrs. James Mildwaters, of Scott's Creek and Messrs. Joseph and Caleb Lewis, of Cherry Gardens.

South Australian Register Tuesday 4th July 1854
Monday July 3rd, 1854:- the ship Nugget, 1,128 tons, Benton, Master, from Liverpool April 1st (4th) 1854
-15th ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1854; 10 births and 12 deaths on the passage; Arthur D. White, surgeon-superintendent.

This Government emigrant ship arrived yesterday, in 90 days from Liverpool, having left that port on the 4th April. The numbers of souls about to be landed we find stated at 400. During the voyage the Surgeon Superintendent had as many as 30 young patients prostate; and the deaths chiefly from Measles and Croup, were no fewer than 12 in number. The names of the Emigrants will be found in the proper column, but the official classification has not reached us.

This first-class Clipper ship, which has just accomplished her first voyage from England, was built at Quebec by Messrs. Oliver and Co., and is the property of J. Bold, Esq., of Liverpool. Although the voyage from England has been performed in less time, under more favourable circumstances of wind and weather, the Nugget has fully maintained her high character, as having been known to make a distance of 310 Miles in 24 hours; for on her voyage to Port Adelaide, whilst under close reefed topsails, her average speed for three days in succession was twelve knots an hour. The weather was more than usually variable, with a remarkable succession of calms and head winds. the longitude of the Cape of Good Hope was passed on the 13th June.

Arrived here on the 3rd July, having been ninety one days on the passage, bringing to the Colony 402 souls. Ten births and fourteen deaths occurred at sea; measles prevailing during the early part of the voyage. Eight deaths were caused by that disease. This ship is admirably adapted for the conveyance of emigrants - it is lofty between the decks, and well lighted, and ventilated. Upwards of a hundred single girls arrived by this ship, but were not of the class most in demand in the colony. The surgeon-superintendent of the Nugget is of opinion that the system of berthing amidships might have been adopted with benefit in this vessel. He objects to the lying-in hospital being in the compartment appropriated to the young women, as it is the most noisy part of the ship, and also most difficult of speedy access at night.
