Boy Cyclist And Motor Cyclist Hurt In Smash
In a collision between a motor cycle and push bicycle in Oxide Street about 5.50 p.m. yesterday, the rider of the bicycle suffered a probable fracture of the skull and concussion and the rider of the motor cycle a broken nose and abrasions.
Clarence Thomas Gould (16), of 712 Chapple Street, was the rider of the bicycle, and John Cartwright Crace (21), of 342 Morgan Street, was in charge of the motor cycle. Both were admitted to Hospital for treatment, Gould in a serious condition. His condition today, however, was stated to be improved. Police report indicates that Gould, was riding his bicycle east in Oxide Street when he made a right hand turn in front of Grant's ice works. Crace was riding west about 28 miles an hour when the lad turned in front of him. He was unable to avoid the 'cyclist, who was thrown to the roadway by the collision. Gould fell in a hunched position, his head striking the bitumen, and Crace was also thrown from his machine.
Force of the impact broke the cycle in two, but the only damage to the motor bike was a broken headlight.

Tries On Duke's Cap:
While the Duke of Gloucester, Australia's Governor General designate, was inspecting a Victoria League hostel in the south of Eng land, 20-year-old Flight Sergeant Douglas Maxwell Flimmell, of Dalkeith, tried his cap on.
It fitted well but that of the Duke's A.D.C. was too small.
The cap fitting episode occurred shortly after a flying bomb had passed overhead and exploded nearby while the Duke of Gloucester was inspecting a guard of honour. Flight Sergt. Fimmell has described those incidents in a letter to his parents, Mr and Mrs H.J. Fimmell of Hobbs Avenue, Dalkeith, said that as he was the senior member of the guard they asked him to salute the Duke. Just as I saluted the Duke of Gloucester a flying bomb came over at a very low height, passed right over us and landed about three streets away. We expected the Duke to tell us to run inside but instead he didn't take any notice at all. The only thing he did was blink when it actually exploded. "The Duke left his cap in the writing room while he inspected the rest of the place, so a couple of us decided to see how we would look in his cap," he writes. "It just fitted me fine but that of his A.D.C. was too small so I decided the Duke's would be most suitable for me."
