AN OLD COLONIST.
Obituary:
The late John Hillman, an old colonist, who died at Wirrabara on Wednesday, October 17, after a short illness, aged 81 years, was born on March 31, 1836, at Plymouth, England, and arrived with his parents in South Australia in the ship Catherine Stuart Forbes, which arrived at Glenelg on the 18th October, 1837, and was therefore a colonist of 80 years. At an early age he went to Nairne, and engaged in farming pursuits. He left there after a while, and proceeded to the Victorian diggings, where he had little or no luck, and returned to South Australia, and spent a few years in the south-east. He eventually returned to Nairne, where he married Miss Sarah Prosser, eldest daughter of the late James Prosser. When the Northern Areas were first opened 40 years ago he came north and took up land and started farming on Willowie. After 18 years he removed to Booleroo Centre, and after six years' farming there he experienced bad seasons, and then came to Wirrabara, where he had resided for the 15 years prior to his death. His death is deeply regretted throughout the district. He leaves a widow and three sons (Messrs. R.J. and H. Hillman, Western Australia; and R.H. Hillman, Wirrabara), and two daughters (Mrs. G.B. Partridge, Belton and Miss F.A. Hillman, Wirrabara), also 17 grandchildren. His remains were interred in the Wirrabara Cemetery on Thursday, October 18, Capt. Abel, of the Salvation Army, officiating at the grave.
