The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889 - 1931) Tue 29 Jul 1902 Page 7 PETERSBURG RAILWAY FATALITY Petersburg, July 23. The inquest on the body of Amos Horace Green, who was run over and killed by a train on Friday morning at the first crossing east of Dowd's Hill, was held at the Petersburg Courthouse on Friday afternoon. Mr. G. W. Halcombe acted as coroner. John Henry Smart, a farmer, living at Dawson, identified deceased as his nephew, aged about l8. They were working together for the district council of Coglin, road making. The deceased had been very melancholy of late. On awakening at midnight witness missed the deceased. It was a bright moonlight night. Searched for him and found lying in a cattle pit on the railway line. His head was severed from his body and lying 4 or 5 ft. away. The deceased was an orphan. His father had hanged himself in a lunatic asylum. Robert Perkins, a farmer, who was called to the scene of the fatality and saw the body, said his idea was that the deceased must have been standing in the pit between the rails with his head over the north rail when the train came along. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased committed suicide whilst temporarily insane.
