Evening Journal (Adelaide, SA : 1869 - 1912) Fri 16 Aug 1889 Page 4 CORONER'S INQUEST. SUICIDE. On Thursday morning the City Coroner held an inquest at the North-terrace Asylum into the death of John Green, a patient, who was found hanging on the previous afternoon in an outhouse belonging to that institution. Evidence was called showing that the deceased, aged thirty-one, had been an inmate of the Asylum for about seven months. When he first went to the Asylum he remained only a few weeks and was discharged, but returned in a few days. He was a blacksmith, and previously resided at Jamestown. He was married and left a wife and two children. The deceased was regarded as a harmless patient, and on the day in question he went into an outhouse. He had been there a few minutes when one of the other patients went to the building and found him hanging to a bracket which held the cistern. The alarm was immediately given and the man cut down, but life was extinct. The Jury returned a verdict that the deceased committed suicide whilst in an unsound state of mind.

The deceased, who was 31 years of age, was formerly a blacksmith at Jamestown and had a wife and two children. He showed signs of mental derangement about seven months ago, but was discharged after a few days' treatment. After his liberation he quickly relapsed into his former state and was readmitted into the asylum, where he remained until the time of his death. His manner did not excite unusual attention, but on Wednesday afternoon one of the patients entering the watercloset found his body suspended by a leathern strap, from the bracket supporting the water cistern. He had been working in the garden a few minutes previously, but (e)very effort made to restore animation after the body was cut down was of no avail. The strap with which the body was suspended was usually worn as a belt by the deceased. A verdict of suicide while of un sound mind was returned.
