The Register (Adelaide, SA : 1901 - 1929) Mon 3 Apr 1922 CASUALTIES. TORRENS FATALITY. An enquiry regarding the death or Frederick Cyril Nelson, whose body was found floating in the River Torrens on March 28, was conducted by the City Coroner (Dr. W. Ramsay Smith), at the Adelaide Police Court No. 2 on Saturday morning. Robert Leech, wharf labourer, of Glanville Blocks, said he identified the body of the deceased. He was 28 years of age, and followed the occupation of farm labourer. He had lived with his sister, Mrs. McKellar, at Glanville Blocks. He had known Nelson for 16 years, who lately had been in bad health. Some time ago he had a conversation with the deceased, and, reflecting on that, the witness thought Nelson was then contemplating suicide. The deceased had worried a good deal about the death of his twin brother. Mrs. Ruby May MacKeilar, of Glanville Blocks, said the deceased was her brother and had lived at her place. She last saw him alive about 4 p.m. on March 24, at her home. He then told her he was going to his father at Mallala, and that if he missed the train he would stay at Kent Town. He had not been well and had said he could not sleep. John William Greig, a student, of Prince Alfred College, said he was rowing in a boat in company with three others, on the Torrens on March 28, when he saw the dead body near to the landing at Elder Park. He informed the police. Dr. Arthur Francis Lynch, of Adelaide, stated that he made an examination of the body. There were no external marks of violence. In his opinion, death was due to drowning. The organs of the body were healthy, except that the heart was dilated. The Coroner found that the deceased came to his death on or about March 24 by drowning, of his own act, he being of unsound mind at the time. The following is a description of the clothes the deceased was wearing prior to his death and which have not yet been found:- Brown sac suit, black boots, light felt hat, and white tennis shirt. He also had a brown overcoat, and a silver watch and chain.
