The Narracoorte Herald (SA : 1875 - 1954) Mon 3 Jul 1950 Page 5
PASSING OF MR E. J. (NED) KENNEDY AT NARACOORTE.
The death occurred in the Naracoorte Hospital on June 25 of Mr Edward John (Ned) Kennedy, a well-known resident of the Naracoorte and Millicent districts. The deceased had been in failing health since he suffered a seizure in 1940, although he had periods of reasonably good health.
In the past three months he had visited a sister at Mount Barker (Mrs. Fitzgerald), and for a time he received house medical attention there. Later he visited his son Paul at Renmark, and again found It necessary to enter hospital. He returned to Naracoorte, where he contracted pleurisy, and was admitted to the local institution where he appeared to be making good progress. However, on Sunday night, when his family left his bedside he was particularly bright, but a sudden seizure two hours later proved fatal.
The late Mr. Kennedy was born in the Millicent district on March 17, 1878, and was therefore 72 years of age at the time of his death. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. M. Kennedy, of Millicent, where he spent his boyhood days. As a youth he worked in the district, and later came to reside in Naracoorte, where he secured blocks of land in the Magarey Estate, where he successfully raised both sheep and cattle. He also had two well-bred entires, Sir William and Young Fireaway.
In later years Mr. Kennedy sold his land interests, and came to reside in the town. He took up general agency work, and in 1918 commenced a hire car service, which he continued successfully until early this year.
The late Mr. Kenndy took a keen interest in sporting generally. He was a foundation member and Secretary of the Naracoorte Gun Club. He was also a member and Secretary of the Naracoorte Hunt club for a number of years, and was a prominent member of the Naracoorte Racing Club throughout the whole of his residence in this district. He was a member of the Caledonian Society for many years, a member of Naracoorte's Coursing Club, and an original member of the Naracoorte Bowling Club. In later years he joined the Naracoorte R.A.O.B. Lodge, in which he took a keen interest.
In 1912 Mr. Kennedy was married to Miss Mary Jones, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Jones, of Mount Gambier. His wife predeceased him in Adelaide five years ago. There are five boys in the family, namely, William, Leo, Arthur, Paul and Thomas. A daughter, Catherine, died in infancy. There are 12 grandchildren. Brothers are William (Millicent), David (Millicent), Martin (Millicent), Jack (Tantanoola), and Mary (Mrs. Fitzgerald) is the only sister. Deceased brothers are Richard, Thomas, Michael, and Joseph.
The late Mr. Kenndy was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, and his funeral rites were performed by Father M. Keaney of St. Xaviers, Adelaide, and the remains were interred in West Terrace cemetery. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Platt Bros. (T.I. Peden), of Naracoorte, in conjunction with Mr. Frank Siebert, of Adelaide.
