Southern Argus (Port Elliot, SA : 1866 - 1954) Thu 28 Aug 1919 The Victor Harbor Times and Encounter Bay and Lower Murray Pilot (SA : 1912 - 1930) Fri 29 Aug 1919 PORT ELLIOT. August 20. At the comparatively early age of 42, Mr. James Chambers, a well-known member of the community, passed away on Friday night last. His genial humour and kindheartedness, that always saw the silver lining to every cloud, and made him a favourite at every social gathering, will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Never very robust in health, he had to leave St Peter's College for greater home care, and received most of his education at Port Elliot Rectory, from Rev. T. M. Boyer, B.A. Some time after his father's death he married Miss Mary Alice Provis, second daughter of Mr. Joseph Hannum Provis, in 1900, and settled down to farming in this district. The life proved too strenuous for him, as he was handicapped with serious heart trouble, and he had to relinquish his occupation on the advice of his medical adviser. Subsequently he removed to the township, in which he purchased from Miss Bailly the well-known boarding house called "The Bungalow." He took an active part in most local affairs. As a member of the Southern Agricultural Show Committee he will he much missed. He was a keen sportsman, and played a good game at cricket and bowls. The funeral took place last Sunday, when his remains were interred in the Church of England Cemetery, Port Elliot. Rev. T. M. Boyer, M.A., conducted a short service in the church and also at the graveside. The deceased has left a widow and a son James. His widow has decided to carry on "The Bungalow", and the most sincere sympathy and good wishes are extended to her by all.
James married Mary Alice PROVIS [19332] [MRIN: 7108], daughter of Joseph Hannum PROVIS [19335] and Mary HOBBS [19336], on 24 Apr 1900 in St Jude Church, Port Elliot, South Australia. (Mary Alice PROVIS [19332] was born on 13 Dec 1873 in Tiatukia, South Australia, died on 5 Oct 1943 in Victor Harbor, South Australia and was buried in Port Elliot, South Australia.)
