Doug grew up on a farm going to local Waikato primary schools then he boarded at King's College (Remuera) for secondary education. Post school he took up farm work. He was married with a child during WW2 and moved to New Plymouth as part of the Home Guard. After the War he returned to Matamata and bought a dairy farm in Buckland Rd, Hinuera where he lived and worked until the 1970s. Doug was a very social man; he belonged to about three Masonic Lodges in the Waikato district. He also had a part-share in a race-horse called "Ellan Vannin" (the Manx name for "Isle of Man"). Doug Cannell's grandfather came to NZ c1859 and his heritage was in the Isle of Man. Latterly, he sold the farm and retired to 14 Queens Parade Devonport until his death in 1984.
