Eileen's father left the family when she was 4 years old. Her mother had to work so Eileen stayed in a Catholic orphanage at Devonport where she attended St Leo's at Devonport; later she boarded with two middle aged spinsters, the McCarthy sisters, while she remained at St Leo's School.

When Eileen's mother married Michael "Mick" Kaveney in 1925 Eileen was reunited with the family in Matamata. Mick owned a stationery shop in Matamata and Eileen worked in the shop for a while and then she applied for a job at Cummings the Draper where she was offered more money. She met and married Doug Cannell in 1937. During WW2 they lived in Taranaki but eventually they bought a farm in Buckland Road, Hinuera. During the 1950s Eileen and Doug travelled to England by ship. In the 1970s Eileen and Doug retired from farming in the Waikato and moved to Auckland at where they bought a home with a sea-view at 14 Queens Parade, Devonport. When Douglas died suddenly in 1986 Eileen remained at Devonport for a short time before selling and moving to Devon Park at Stanley Point. Later she lived at Powley Village until she had a stroke c1998; then she lived with Barry and Gail at Waimauku until full-time care was necessary at Edmonton Meadows Retirement Home Henderson. She remained there until her death in 2003.

Eileen married Douglas James CANNELL [323] [MRIN: 105], son of Percy CANNELL [325] and Vera Winifred HOOKER [326], on 27 Mar 1937 in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Matamata, NZ. (Douglas James CANNELL [323] was born on 21 Feb 1909 in Cambridge, New Zealand, died on 11 Dec 1984 in Auckland, New Zealand and was buried in ashes scattered Devonport Golf Course.)
