Adelaide Local:
Before Mr. W. C. Gilespie. SM Nurse Claims Wages, Notice
Ivy May Hughes; registered nurse, of East parade, Mitcham, sued Beatrice Emily Simpson of Riverton Hospital, Unley road, Unley Park, for £51/17/4. The claim comprised £30 3/4 alleged to be wages due, and £21/14/- in lieu of 14 days' notice of termination of services. Mrs. Simpson denied liability. Mr. E. W. Mills for plaintiff; Mr. C. A. Sandery for defendant. Mr. Mills, opening said that Miss Hughes, a double certificated sister, had been employed at the hospital from May to July. Following conversations with a patient who left the hospital, when Miss Hughes came to work on July 5, Mrs. Simpson told her not to take her coat off and dismissed her. The defence, Mr. Sandery said, was an allegation that Miss Hughes had taken a patient to her own home, and that she was therefore summarily dismissed, disentitling her from the current week's wages and from payment in lieu of notice. Liability for 47½ hours overtime, included in the wages claim, was denied. Judgment was reserved.

Adelaide Local
Before Mr. W. C Gillespie, SM Nurse's Claim Fails
A nurse had committed a breach of faith towards her employer, the SM said, in dismissing a £51 claim yesterday, Ivy May Hughes, registered nurse, of East parade, Mitcham, had sued Beatrice Emily Simpson, of Kiverton Hospital, Unley Park, for £3/3/4 alleged to be wages due, and £21/14/- in lieu of 14 days' notice. Mrs. Simpson had denied liability, contending that she had lawfully summarily dismissed Miss Hughes. The SM said that Mrs. Simpson was fully justified in dismissing Miss Hughes without notice. At a time when Miss Hughes was employed as a nursing sister in the hospital, she arranged to accommodate an 87-year-old patient in her own home. She clearly committed a breach of faith and duty to Mrs. Simpson. Mr. E. W. Mills for Miss Hughes; Mr. C. A. Sandery for Mrs. Simpson.
