The West Australian Friday 7 March 1952 FATAL SMASH OCCURS IN DENSE SMOKE ALBANY, Thursday. Smoke from a bushfire is believed to be the cause of a road fatality near Albany today. The victim was Lloyd Hocking (39), married, the father of three children and a well-known business man. He died in the Albany District Hospital soon after his admission as a result of a collision on the Denmark-road, 14 miles from Albany about 3.30 p.m. to day. He received severe chest and abdominal injuries. Mr. Hocking was driving towards Denmark, when his tourer car collided with a truck loaded with sawn timber and driven by Alexander Duncan McDonald, farmer, of Tincurrin. towards Albany. The accident was reported to have been due to dense smoke from a bushfire which was burning on both sides of the road. After the collision, Mr. McDonald and an employee, Duncan Fernie, who was with him in the truck, were several times compelled to beat out burning scrub which threatened to ignite the badly damaged vehicle while they were trying to assist Mr. Hocking. Mr. Hocking was conscious after the accident. He was taken to hospital in a school bus, which arrived at the scene after the smash occurred. The Albany police are making inquiries.
