Charles was adopted as a very small child; Ella went with her mother to collect him. Ella said "she changed his dirty clothes and put on the nice clothes she had." The man where they collected him from said "if he cries just give him some brandy."
When the family removed to Mitcham, Charles helped look after his mother. The day his father died he was asked "to go to the paddock and see why he had not come home." He said he would go directely but put it off. When his father was found, dead, he always blamed himself.
Every Mothers Day he rode his bike to put flowers on his mother's grave.
Charles served in New Guinea, Borneo, Ambon and other Indonesion Islands during World War 2
